Herman's fathers name will give us something to go at, hopefully.

However if you are searching here after the war, you should consider that the name Herman was possibly dropped. Hostilities towards anything German or sounding German was immense, they even changed the name of a dog, from German Shepherd to Alsatian. Herman could well have been known and recorded here as Charles.

Considered that Bert also after reading another thread on here I remember someone saying that surnames were also altered to loose the German sound of them.

Very sad, whole families looking there identities.

Morning All

Advice needed.

I am not a paper trail genealogist, I am "Press the button, and hope for the best" one !!

I have now been given the opportunity to visit the Library on Tuesday for research

Ha but here's the problem.........what am I looking for. Will be getting there early and will stay most of day, so will get to see those on duty.

What I am thinking is because of all of this new information, I need to see where Nora lived, possibly when she moved and also may be Herman too.

I think I will need to see some sort address information from 1911 - 1918 and a bit beyond. I have her address from 1911.........I know Marys form 1912.........Herman gave her address in 1918, possibly she stayed there longer, will have to see.

What I need to know is do I have to pre-book anything to help me with this because I only have tomorrow to put it in place.

Quite excited to get this opportunity and I know its going to be a huge learning curve moving from pressing buttons to using my brains.

Really looking forward to this, and seeing you all.

Pointers would be appreciated

As you have addresses I would suggest that you look at electoral rolls for those addresses following through the years. I'm not sure but I think Liverpool Electoral rolls are on film but I don't know if they are filmed or all the first part of the 20th century.

For the years you are not sure of you could try the directories under the assorted family names and then check the electoral rolls.

What are the addresses? Are some of the addresses for Bootle? If so I don't think they are at Liverpool Record Office. I think Bootle (Sefton Council not Liverpool) are available at Crosby Library. I think the Liverpool electoral rolls around WW1 and the 1920s and 1930s are on microfilm.

I remember when the Liverpool Record Office was temporarily at Sandhills making an appointment to see electoral roll registers for 1945 to 1950s as those were not on microfilm. You're best contacting Liverpool Record Office to ask about access to the rolls and the dates available on microfilm.

Blue is right that some records may be held at Crosby, however, try and check out marriages etc. if possible perhaps on LancsBMD and check with the catalogue whether these are held for the dates you need on microfilm. If it doubt send them an email requesting the place and what you want, giving dates, and they will reply and advise that they have either booked for you or that microfilms are available.

Trade/street directories should be on film.

1919 Electoral Rolls for Liverpool are on Microfilm, however as Blue70 says Bootle came under a different district and these will be at Crosby Library.

I'm not sure how complete the Bootle Electoral rolls are. I know for some areas now covered by Sefton MBC they had been destroyed long before the change of local authorities in 1974. I will get back later today with the relevant info.

I have spoken to the Information and Reference Services and they all the Bootle Electoral Rolls. They also have many Liverpool Directories covering the area.

If you ring them on 0151 257 6401 and tell them what it is you want to see and when you are coming they will get it out for you. They'll also just get it as you want. When you ring tell them I. Told you to ring, they know me as we do a twice monthly help desk there.

On film they have the Bootle Times and a large collection of Bootle photographs.

Crosby Library is actually in Waterloo and the bit you want is upstairs. There is a car park next door (paying). If you are on the train get off at Waterloo, turn right out of the station, walk down South Road to the traffic lights, cross the main road and you will see the library next to the LDS church.

Sorry for delay in answering this.........been to hospital to meet an new addition to our tree. Little grandson born early this morning

Only just got in so will ring in morning. 30years ago I lived in Waterloo so going to be interesting.

Thank you for all your help will concentrate on the address on Hermans draft so after 1918.....technically I should find her sisters hubby there as well. But here goes.

Quick up date

Death certificate arrived this morning.

Everything correct, daughter Nora in attendance. She died of heart disease.

Herman has become Charles (his middle name) and he was a Merchant Seaman.

Afternoon all

I have found a death for a Charles Murray (via findmypast). It is a death at sea in 1936. The ship involved is the Seven Sea Sound. Having searched as Herman and then Charles. I can find only one death at sea up to 1939 and this is it.

The period I am looking for is before 1939 (Nora states she is a widow in 1939) According to Wrecksite the ship was built in 1925 and passed through a variaty of companys, she was built as a steamship/cargo. In 1943 she was torpeado and sunk all lives were lost.

Wild stab in the dark but if I got this death certificate, as its a death at sea, would it give me any clues to his life as in address, wife name.

BT334 Registry of Shipping and Seamen: Registers and Indexes of Births, Marriages and Deaths of Passengers and Seamen at Sea gives the month of entry into the death index as April.

It may refer to this newspaper entry of 2 March 1936 of the Western Daily Press and Bristol Mirror

Wonder was the Boatswain Charles Murray ???

Charles had been a seaman on merchant ship since at least 1918 when he married Nora, so I suppose he may have made it to Boatswain.

No Marriage certificate yet
