Buildings in Liverpool

Wareing Webb, my 3rd GGfather, was a stationer in Liverpool. At the time of the 1841 Census, he was living at 57 Hope Street, Liverpool whilst his business location was 9 Castle Street, Liverpool. I have looked on Google earth and Google maps to locate these premises, but have been unable to read the building numbers, to identify same.
I have two questions:
Are the buildings as seen on Google are what was there at the time of the 1841 Census, or are they late 1800's ?

If they are the original buildings, is there a chance of obtaining a photo of the buildings ?

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't believe the buildings would be as old as you are looking at, the restaurant/coffee shop CAU is number 7-13 Castle Street so 9 would be in that area, numbers work out from the Town Hall which is at the end of the street.

You may find this list useful https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_II_ ... verpool-L2 although No. 9 isn't on the list 3 & 5 and 6 & 8 are.

I doubt you will find any photographs of the date you are looking for, would suggest you check out some Facebook sites - put Liverpool in the search box and you will find Groups where people will post old pictures and photographs. But I think what you may find better are perhaps Herdman prints, I have checked what I have but no luck with Castle Street, here is one of Tithe Barn which is a nearby street, to show the style of buildings that would have been in Liverpool around the 1840's

I googled and found one but of a much earlier date, 1786. The spire at the end may have been St George's Church so the Exchange would be behind the artist and so your Number 9 would be on the left.

Number 9 Castle Street was on the east side of Castle Street, between the Dale Street end of Castle Street and Queen Avenue, an old alley that still exists off Castle Street. There are later 19th century buildings on the site now. This is a modern view of the location:-

Perhaps one of the men in the picture was avoiding his creditors ?

I haven't been on the forum for a little while but noticed this post about old Castle Street. You might like to see the image of Castle Street circa 1831 in my article for Antiquarian Horology here - http://www.ahsoc.org/media/assets/file/ ... as-wm6.pdf As you will see, I have estimated where number 14 was but the picture will give you a good idea of how the right part of Castle Street looked only ten years earlier than the time you were researching.

What a fantastic, interesting article and those watches are superb works of art. What a shame a greatly talented man was unable to carry on due to debt.

I was at Lancaster Castle quite recently and on the guided tour they talk about the debtor's prison which was quite separate from the main prison, well worth a visit.
