Re: 1939 Register Update
As with when the 1911 census was first available it may be possible to narrow down people in a household. Without a subscription this is what I have found.
There is a reference on the bottom of each entry eg RG101/0194G/012/29
Now I also know that there was a Mary Ann Alice in the same household, so making sure my searches contain "Hackney" in the Borough, I can find the entry for Mary A A and the reference shows the next number RG101/0194G/012/30
One other person who is officially closed must be mum, born 1917, so less than the 100 years.
I haven't made the Street name work for this yet, although I do know the address, but at least using surname and Borough in the fields and checking each reference might help you check the occupants of a house...... strange the street name does work but my family weren't listed at the address.
PS attempting to use the fields for the TNA reference - ie RG101 and trying various other parts of the number in the "Item Number" box resulted in an error being reported, maybe this is something they need to fix.

Re: 1939 Register Update
My mother exists, but the whole family have been recorded under the wrong name. Not a typo, a completely different name.
I could tell them, but it will cost them seven pounds.

Re: 1939 Register Update
It's great as a free resource. Try the street address search. You can view one occupant name for each household. Especially useful for streets not covered by Kelly's Directory 1938. I knew my grandmother was living at a particular house in India Street in 1940. I clicked on the house and it was another name. I clicked on the other houses in the street until I found them in another house in the same street.

Re: 1939 Register Update
Yes, I've found that you can use it to your advantage.
My dad can't be found - he's obviously the 'closed' entry with his parents and brother. His record should be open, as he died well before the cut-off date of 1991.
What has been useful is that certain names I've gleaned from searching the register, as Blue mentioned above, have triggered all kinds of memories in talking to my mum on the phone this afternoon. Air raids, searchlights over Liverpool, the sound of the Dornier bombers going over. Found out a lot more than I thought I would today.

Re: 1939 Register Update
I've just decided to purchase a household and was very pleased with the results. My great-grandmother was listed and, pleasingly, another great-grandfather was three doors down and a step-relative in the next house. Three for the price of one!
Re: 1939 Register Update
How to search using the TNA reference to show all available names on the image:-
Do a normal search and make a note of the reference. It consists of 4 segments:-
1. Ignore RG number
2. Keep next number & letter
3. Keep next number
4. ignore last number
Do a blank search. Enter the 2nd segment as the piece number and the 3rd segment as the item number. Copy and paste them in for quickness.
Doing a search this way you should get a list of people who all appear on the original image and you should be able to see all family members whose records are open.

There are 36 entries for someone who has the surname of "Ditto"
3,037,755 entries with ? in.
The are also numerous who have no surname recorded at all just first name.

Re: 1939 Register Update
It's just worked for me using Mary's example:-
Piece number: 0194G
Item number: 012
Just enter the piece number and item number nothing else. You should get 32 results.

Re: 1939 Register Update
Thanks Blue, that's cracked it. I knew it was a 4 floor building - house split into flats - but I'm amazed just how many people lived in it.
Note everybody that a list like that doesn't show those whose records are officially closed, but checking the family name does show up that there is somebody.

Re: 1939 Register Update
They appear to have cottoned on to the Reference trick and have now removed it from the results.
Wonder if they are allowed to do that as it's a TNA reference and in their Search Tips, they do actually state
Technical search – If you know the TNA reference for the page you are looking for, you can search by Piece number and Item number. You must complete both of these fields, not just one.
I have written to say that I would not dream of ordering an entry if I couldn't check it by seeing who else was in the household as we could do previously using the reference.

Re: 1939 Register Update
You can still get the piece number and item number from the URL at the top of the page or by hovering over unlock this household the URL appears in the bottom left corner. Piece number is usually four numbers and a letter, item number usually three numbers beginning with a zero.

Re: 1939 Register Update
Nice one, glad they haven't got rid of that too, will have to keep it quiet in case they hear about it.
Now just wish there was a way of figuring out the street name, I feel sure that somewhere somebody will sneak a list of that TNA codes matching up to streets, just got to give it time.

The 1938 Kellys directory has been very useful too, lets me down on a couple but good on others.

Re: 1939 Register Update
Working out the date of birth I find boring but the address is more enjoyable. Along with the alphabet and asterisk method I have LHP's map street index and a directory to help with a few guesses.
