Is this a programme that you enter your family details into or is it a subscription similar to Ancestry/Findmypast etc.

I believe you mean a subscription to their databases. I would check to see what you want out of a subscription, The Genealogist has four levels with their content listed here https://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/compare/ but if it was me I would want to know what county coverage they have ie Ancestry can't be beaten (I believe) for Lancashire, Findmypast for Cheshire. But these are mainly the two counties that I have been researching so I can only speak from my experience.

Can you tell us what has attracted you to The Genealogist?

In my opinion The Genealogist is no different from Ancestry and FMP they are all inter linked. Save your money and go to a Liverpool Library. Ancestry and FMP are free.

I have a Program Family Tree 2010 which I do not Like the layout I find the 2006 F.T. much better Just thought I would try another one which I believe combines the research angle and a storage facility for your Family Tree & I have heard some good reports for it (Just wanted to see if there were any negative comments before I committed my Pennies )

To be honest I hadn't realised that they provided space for your online tree, although I suspect that many of the documents you have collected on your hard drive won't be uploaded to their site, I could be wrong.

If it's software you are interested in, why not remove the 2010 version and revert to the older one. If you are looking for something new altogether, then why not try the free trials that most of them offer and see how you take to them?

hi Mary
I have the 2006 and have reverted to that but F.T.do not support that now they want you to pay for an upgrade to 2014 which looks like 2010

I will ask Kathryn if she would take a look at your query, she's very knowledgeable about FTM in all versions I believe.

Hi
I have upgraded my Family Tree Maker to 2014 from 2010 and use that regularly. Didn't like 2010 that much but find 2014 better.
I would have thought that you should be still able to use Family Tree Maker 2006 as a program by itself, what I think they mean is that you can't search Ancestry through it cause it's not supported anymore but if you like it's layout and how it works you could stick with it and search Ancestry separately.
What is it about the layout you don't like? There could be ways of changing it.

I think, from what I can remember! There were a lot of things about 2010 that regular FTM users didn't like so when 2014 came in they put a lot of the missing things back in. If you're asking about the trees to be printed out there are lots of different ones to choose from.

There is some further information here with screenshots:
https://genealogysupplies.com/family-tree-maker-2014
http://www.familytreemaker.com/products/current

There are also some video preview clips on Youtube: if link doesn't work just google FTM youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjWFc5zKMoY

Or you could come along to Southport Group Help Desk on a Saturday morning in the Atkinson from 10.30am and I could be there for you to view my FTM and see whether you want to upgrade before you spend your money!! or the Society Conference in Southport on Sat 24th October I will be there then too.
Hope this helps.

Hi Kate
I have invested in F T 2014 and I'm now starting to upload the data in my 2010 tree which has gone well my next problem is I have put most of my information in 2006 over the years and wish to join it with the 2014 , it started to combine and then stopped after about 20 names and will not start again despite several attempts how do I get it to start again . Hope you can help

The way i've done it is to export from an older version to gedcom then open up in newer version.

So open up 2006 and export your family file into a gedcom file. This will then be saved to your computer. Then open up 2014 and open tree from the gedcom and that should work.

Hope this makes sense, it's difficult explaining instructions without seeing it in front of me!

I bought FTM 2014 a few days ago as it gives you a 6 month subscription to Ancestry for 6 months, cheap at £24.99. My monthly sub was due to run out on October 3rd now I am good until April 3rd next year as it just extended it. :D

I have a current 3 month Gold subscription with The Genealogist website but I won't be renewing it as a lot of the records to view are at the Diamond level only. As Mary says it depends on your areas of research as to which site is best, mine are Liverpool (Ancestry) and Cheshire (Find My Past).
Povall Cheshire/Liverpool, Williams/Owens Caernarvon, Brown Liverpool/Cumberland/Ireland, Pritchard Liverpool, Atherton Liverpool, Banks Liverpool, Kelly IOM, Grimes/Botworth/Smith Wirral, Rice Manchester/Ireland, Lockley Manchester, Bowler Manchester.

Hi Kate
Mine was a patch which I joined to my 2010 F/t and it came with a months free sub. to Ancestry and I have heard that you have to cancel the membership or they keep you going for the year so I canceled that but they said they can't find that record ?
