WILLIAM LOANE

Post by izzy-mai4 »

My grandmother (Jessie Page) had a brother William Loane who was injured in WW1 and died from his wounds in Leeds Infirmary in May 2015 and is buried in Toxteth Cemetery. He was in the 9th Queens Royal Lancers and I know he is mentioned in the cloisters in Coventry Cathedral. I know what medals he received and I know where his grave is but I don't have enough information about his life. I know his father Archibald Loane was born in Scotland as was my grandmother. If anyone has any information about his life whether he was married or had children I would love to hear from you. I have just commemorated his name with the Royal British Legion for the centenary year.

I would like to thank you all so very much for your information. Your help has been enormous I have only started looking at my family tree lately but I am hooked. I have lots of family and ancestors from around the Liverpool area and I was born in Liverpool as well.

It is interesting that his son arrived from Canada in 1949 from Halifax as that is where my best friend from school has lived for the last 40 years.

Hi Izzy, My name is William John Loane (Bill). I am the son of the late William Loane and Catherine Loane . I was born at 3 Verdi St, Seaforth , Liverpool, although I came to Australia in 1963. I actually met your grandmother Jessie Page about 1973 in Hunts Cross ? Liverpool. I am researching my grandfather William Loane whom you seem to know about. He was batman to capt Francis Grenfell (9th Lancers). My grandfather as you are aware was badly injured on either the 9th or 15th of May 1915 near Ypres, Belgium,as a result of his injuries he died in Leeds on 30th May 1915. He is buried at Smithdown cemetery,Anfield Liverpool. Although I am not aware of the plaque you mentioned in Coventry Catherdral ,there is however a plaque which bears his name( and others from his regiment) in Canterbury Cathedral near the cloisters.(I can let you have a pic of this if you wish) Together with my wife we plan going to Ypres this year ,and at the moment I am trying to locate the area (or battle site)where my grandfather was wounded, also I am having some difficulty locating his medical chart which would indicate the extent of his injuries.Perhaps you may be able to help? Kind regards Billy 3

Hi William how fantastic to read about your Grandfather I have been fascinated by him because my gran Jessie always talked about him when I was a little girl. He was buried in Toxteth Park cemetery on 5 June 2015 Section 10 Grave 395 with Archibald, Margaret and 3 children? He also has a war grave in the same cemetery. His service number is 11652 - rank Private - 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers - I have a copy of his medal card. The news of his death was recorded in Yorkshire Evening Post on Monday 31 May 2015 - he died in Leeds Infirmary (it states wounded in France and brought to Leeds Infirmary on May 12th 1915) I commemorated his death with a donation to the Poppy Appeal this year and received a certificate in recognition of his service to this country. I visited Wigtown in Scotland to see the house William's father Archibald was born - 14 Agnew Crescent. Archibald's father came from Ireland and was a labourer his wife Annie was born in Wigtown. I do not have his medical chart unfortunately. I recently visited Liverpool for my Uncle Ron's funeral (92) he was Jessie's son. My father was Joseph Page. 2 daughters are left Gertrude and Dolly. They said the best person is Tommy Bell (in his 80's) who knew about William but he left the funeral straight after and I didn't get to speak to him. I might be able to get his phone number though.
