Please help me to find Polly Mellon (I am from Denmark)

Post by Danish »

Dear friends
I am a new member, and I am from Denmark.

I am new in the art of searching for family members, and this is why I ask for help.

My great great grandmothers name was Polly Mellon, born in Liverpool October the 2th, 1868.

This is all I know - she got Danish parents, and she added her Danish fathers surname, but Mellon 'survived', and today many has that name in Denmark, thanks to dear Polly.

1. Are you able to help my to find some data about Polly? (I have search a bit, but nothing comes up)

2. Does anybody know whether English girls was send to Denmark/Scandinavia at that time, to be adopted?

I would appreciate help very very much!!!

Best regards
Mellon

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We would appreciate some more information, particularly in response to Hilary's questions. The name Polly is often a nickname but a birth registration for any Mellon birth for that date hasn't shown any results, nor any baptisms.

Thank you for helping me, I appreciate that very much!

I just got some very new informations from the Danish database; 'The Danish People Counting in 1890'.

Here I can see:

1. Polly's mother name and birth date is: Magaret Mellon August the 25th 1847.

In the database, just mentioned, it says she was born in Scotland, and data, on the other hand, when she dies says she was born in Liverpool?
Margeret dies in Denmark May the 16th 1816, 67 years old.

2. About Polly: A strange and peculiar experience - looking through 'the counting 1890 in the nearby area - is that Polly might have been a maid for some years before getting married under the name Nergan Mogensen (Nergan Mellon or Nergan Mellon Mogensen), the data says 'Maid, born in England'.
So could that have been her 'first' real name?
Would it be so strange so she allready got the name Polly (or Nergan) Mellon Mogensen in England?
Polly dies in Denmark January the 9th, 1909, only 40 years old.

I can see that of all the other children/sieblings only Polly has the Mellon name before the Mogensen. The next children (5) are all named just Mogensen, no Mellon. Well, Polly (or Nergan) and her mother is from England (Liverpool, Margeret perhaps born in Scotland) and Margeret married a danish fishermand Jens Mogensen (which is 13 years older).

3. So far I cannot see when and where Margeret Mellon and Jens Mogensen i getting married, perhaps in Liverpool, perhaps in Denmark?

I hope these informations may help the search? Thank you again so very much!
Bet regards

Dear friends

I now have data on Polly's and (apparently) her older sister.

1. Polly Mellon Mogensen, born Oct. 2th 1868, baptized Oct. 11th 1868 in the Catholic Church: Church of St Vincent de Paul (Perhaps the priest is Mary Ann Morrizon or Morrison), Liverpool

2. Ellen-Marie Mogensen, born April 19th 1867, baptized April 21th in the Catholic Church: Church of St Vincent de Paul, Liverpool

I really hope this may help (so happy I got these informations, now I do not have more)

Hi Mellon/Danish

Here are the two baptisms you mentioned. These children have the surname Morrison:-

Dear Blue, Bert and others who have thought about my case.

Thank you so much! You made my day.
This is absolutely great to get to know. Now I know that Polly (Mary) and the twins had a English father Jacobi Morrison, and later two of them went with their mother to live in Denmark, and the Danish fisherman Jens Mogensen became their father.

Since I do not know much about searching I will just try with a few extra questions if you don't mind, perhaps some know how to find the data:

1. But what happened to Jacobi Morrison, did he died shortly after the birth of Polly? Was the funeral held in St Vincent de Paul?
2. Did Jacobi Morrison married Mageretta Mellon their, I guess just before the twins was born?

3. In a Danish counting perhaps Mageretta Mellon (date of birth in the other message) has said she was from Scotland - is it at all possible to find her there somehow?
4. Did Mageretta go to Denmark, or did she meet Jens Mogensen in Liverpool, and they got married there?

Please, if you have time and know how to find something I - and my Danish family - would be more than happy!
Best regards

I think this is the family on the 1871 England Census:-

9 York Street Liverpool

Margaret Morrison, Head, Married, 22, Ireland
Ellen Morrison, Daughter, 4, Liverpool
Mary A Morrison, Daughter, 2, Liverpool,
James P Morrison, Son, 3 months, Liverpool,
Catherine Mallen, Aunt, Unmarried, 28, Dressmaker, Ireland

On Michael's baptism Catherine Mellon or Mallen from the 1871 Census record was the godmother:-

Yes Alison has found the right marriage index information. I can't see the actual marriage register image anywhere online so I think you would need to buy the marriage certificate from the GRO to see what it says.

The details contained on a marriage certificate from England include:-

•Date and place of marriage.
•Name, age and marital status/condition of the parties.
•Occupation and usual address.
•Name and occupation of each party's father.
•Names of the witnesses.
•Name of the person who solemnised the marriage.

This is the official site for buying English certificates:-

Michael Louis Morrison was buried at Ford RC Cemetery Litherland near Liverpool on 10 Mar 1868, aged 10 months, the family were living in a House in Court 20 in Rathbone Street Liverpool at this time.

Dear Blue and Allison

I am so excited. What you gave me is so fantastic!!!
Very relevant data!

Yes, I see this is the family, and no father - so I guess he (James or Jacobi) is dead in 1871.
But at the seems to me that Margeret/Margeretta Mellon (Mellen) got he first Danish child with Jens Mogensen, and it is recorded in Danish Church 'books' that they got five children from 1871.

And I see Polly (got married, and is my great great grandmother) and he older sister Ellen (or Helenor) did, but the two boys Michael and James I cannot see recorded in Denmark. As for Michael he is not on the list from York Street perhaps dead?

Since Margerets/Margrettas aunt is a Mellen or more likely Mellon (As Mageret wrote it in Denmark) she could have been her fathers sister, so the name comes from Ireland and not Scotland?

Thanks for the suggestion to get a marriage certificate, I will ses if I am able to find out how to do that 'I am Danish!', smile.

Are you able in any way to find out how or when James (Jacobi) Morrison died? (Perhaps he had both names or is Jacobi James?).

Thank you.

In the 1871 census Margaret Morrison is listed as "married" so James must have been living elsewhere on census night - perhaps he was working away from home?

I can't see the family in the 1881 England Census, so they may have gone to Denmark by that point.

Here is a possible death registration for James in 1875:

James Morrison is a common name so it is difficult to find him in the records. The marriage certificate will have his occupation he was probably a seaman as they were often missing from the census records. The 1871 Census says Margaret was married so James might have been away at sea. James might have died at a later time or James and Margaret might have separated. Most people could not afford to get divorced in those days that was something the rich people did. A lot of people separated and started a new life with a new partner without divorcing or getting married again.

Dear Alison

Thank you!
There is something strange here, because everything seems by be right, names, date of birth.
But Margeret tells the Danish official in 1911 (the national counting) that she arrived in 1870, and I know she gave birth to a boy around 1871. So there is 'something' around that periode which is interesting.

Do you think i it is possible to find out more about Mellon, if it was from Margarets father? (Or would it be best to get the GRO?

It wouldn't surprise me if James Morrison was the Anglicized version of Jens Mogensen, just a thought.

I wondered the same thing! The names do sound similar.

Danish - do you know when Margaret married Jens Mogenson? and do you know the name of the boy who was born in 1871? According to the 1871 census, James P Morrison was born about that year.

Dear Bert and Allison

Wauvv. If that is true, that's some very exciting aspect.

I have struggled to find out when they were married, because that is not recorded in the Danish Church book (Hornbaek Kirke), but all the other childrens cristenings and such are there.
Their oldest child as on record says is born in the town of Hornbaek, Denmark is Jens Peter Mogensen. He was 19 in the National Counting in early 1890.
