Map of Liverpool Neighborhoods

Post by Jinxieb »

Hello Everyone, I have seen specific neighborhoods in Liverpool mentioned such as Toxteth, Vauxhall, etc, in books and other Liverpool resources. I am hoping that someone would know if there was a map showing the boundaries of these neighborhoods and the streets included? Thanks in advance.

This may not be the easiest method, but I have found this map of districts http://www.liverpool-map.com/liverpool-districts where you can choose which to see.

Combine that with the side by side map - and choose the road map rather than satellite and it might work http://maps.nls.uk/

I'm not aware of any lists of addresses for each district. People who live in Liverpool still ask about the whereabouts of streets they've seen mentioned on census, church and civil records so feel free to ask about any address that's puzzling you. The local newspaper is notorious for getting the districts wrong for news stories. Some boundaries are easier to describe than others. The headings on census records, addresses with district names in local directories and old maps can help to establish the boundaries.

In your first post you asked about boundaries. It would be impossible to reproduce all the different types of boundary: church parishes, electoral wards and polling districts for council and parliament, the villages and urban districts which surrounded the borough or city before they were incorporated into it, postal areas and the many other divisions we impose on ourselves.
Some appear on ordnance survey maps, others on specially-produced versions. All would vary according to the period. Apart from that, local opinions on what local districts are called can vary for snobbish or other reasons!

Just to agree with Daggers about varying opinions about district names the area I live in has an identity problem as do others. I once had an online argument over the existence of a dual identity the other person insisted the area was one name only and couldn't be called by the other name. The so called wrong name was the old district name and was still in use locally and the signage for the area has this name but because there was another newer name for part of the district this person insisted the newer name be applied to separate it as a district in its own right from its historical district.

And don't mention when the Wirral became Merseyside with the boundary changes instead of leafy Cheshire

My Dad grew up in Windermere Street off Breck Road some people say it's Anfield but my Dad's street address was Everton. My Mum grew up in Dingle which is also in the larger district of Toxteth. My Mum's aunt said she lived in West Derby but I would say it was Norris Green. My Grandad lived in Norris Green and his address had West Derby in it. A street can have more than one area or district applied to it. Back in the 1841-1911 census years Liverpool was in Lancashire now it's Merseyside but you still have Lancashire's cricket team playing matches in Liverpool.

Jinxieb you must be terribly confused after all this advice. I can only suggest that if you want clarification of any area, please do ask as many of us live in Liverpool/Lancashire/Merseyside wherever we want to call it and will help as much as we can.

It *is* very confusing for a lot of people, I live in a part of the country now classified as Cumbria but the older people here insist in calling it Lancashire, so when it comes to streets and suburbs it gets ever more finite. I think it's the same as any big city all over the world.

Thank you everyone! I will ask when a question arises. I do understand how neighborhood districts can change. The area of Boston where grew up and still live has many neighborhoods and districts. Most of which have changed boundaries over the years. I am hoping to come to know Liverpool a little better when I come to visit in November.
