1841 census other than on FMP

Post by BarbaraW »

Hello

Looking for some help here before I get frazzled

I only have access to FMP and I know from doing some searches when I had 2 programmes available I could find people on either one or t'other, some even breaking down brick walls.

I have spent literally hour upon hour looking for

William GRIMES (no other info known)
Mary Ann (his wife)
and son John b 1837

Although Mary Ann was born in Liverpool (c 1819) she was tried at Salford Quarter Sessions (in 1847) so I'm wondering if she met and married Mr Grimes in Manchester, she is known to have a brother Robert and sister Eliza, I have even done searches with no surnames but to no avail. As she is on her way to Australia by 1847 I have no other census to look at and only found out yesterday that Australia pulps and shreds all their censuses!!! So I can't trace her forward from there.

OOooooo thank you SO MUCH Bert you are a superstar!!!!!!! 8)

The only discrepancy being Mary Ann saying on all the records she was from Liverpool, well maybe she was living there after moving from Ireland??

I should let you know this is my first "case" for the project run by Pat Bellas of this group for female convicts who were transported to Van Diemen's Land and what an interesting journey it has turned out to be. I've learnt more about the transportation of convicts than in the 30 years I lived in Australia!!!!

(ps Don't tell anybody, but I have GRIMES in my own family tree (no relation) and sometimes they have shown up in censuses as CRIMES  )

I have now found their marriage on FMP under CRIMES :o

I'll have to chase that up now as it's a transcript from the IGI and our remit is not to spend any money doing this project and I have to save my pennies for my own lot anyway.

Could somebody please do a lookup for me on Ancestry as according to Manchester archives Ancestry has all the Manchester records.

WILLIAM CRIMES to MARY ANN FLAHERTY
17 AUGUST 1836

Cathedral, Manchester

In FMP all that shows up for these names is a marriage transcript from Family Search with the above bare details. I am hopefully looking for Mary's father to be called James FLAHERTY and William's father would be a bonus but I can't remember how much detail is on marriages in this year.

I sort of guessed that you were on one of your first "naughty girls" for the project. It would seem that if you had a word with Pat or Terry, not all of the girls were honest about their origins, some not even being sure of them anyway.

Oh yes they were very creative with their ages!! When Mary Ann married second husband Charles FEATHERSTONE in VDL she said she was 24 when in reality according to the census and her age on being transported she was in fact 31!!

Talk about never ask a lady her age...........knock 7 years off for good luck.

Checked the Manchester Cathedral record on Ancestry but it is only the Banns so no fathers names. The witnesses were Robert Flaherty and John Crimes. Only Robert signed the record the bride and groom and John Crimes only made an X
