John Meek ship broker/mexican merchant

This is my first post ever so I'm not sure if I am doing it right. Go easy please!

My g/grandfather is listed at several addresses - Ashdown House, Rainhill 1851; 88 Fort Terrace, Bootle1861 and 51 Hope St Liverpool in 1881. There is no census return for 1871 but a photograph of the whole family taken about 1865 shows the garden front of an attractive house (perhaps late Regency style) and is noted as "Warbrick House" Fazackerly .

Could anyone tell me if this house still stands or even where it was? Does anyone else have an interest in this family? I would love to have a contact. Regards, 3Colt

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If you check maps.google.co.uk you will see the junction of Warbreck Moor with Longmoor Lane, the house would have been in that vicinity although don't believe it is still there.

I would suggest that you join some of the Liverpool/Merseyside Facebook Groups, many of these post photographs of old buildings and I believe I have seen Warbreck House mentioned on one of them recently. You could ask for a photograph of a particular place on one of these Groups and if there is one available they will try to help.

If you google the name it will show you a veterinary business with that name, it might be that the house was on that site, its behind the Black Horse pub.

Hi Marya A and Bertieone, that is really great and thank you for making the research. I am hoping to visit Liverpool soon and this gives more structure to the visit. Also it produces a new family member to look into. I don't have a Facebook account but that is a good lead as well.

He's a"West Indies Merchant" in that 1871 census entry.

The 1873 Gore's directory lists the residence of John Meek, merchant, as Nicholas Road, Blundellsands

The Liverpool Mercury of 21 June 1876 has a report of the inquest into the death of John Meek's daughter Elizabeth Sarah Charlton Meek who was killed by a train at Hightown. Residence Nicholas Road Blundellsands.


The Liverpool Courier and Commercial Advertiser of 9 December 1870 carries a legal notice concerning the winding up of the Mersey and Weaver company. One of the petitioners is John Meek, Warbreck House, Fazakerley.

Thanks to all. I knew Elizabeth Sarah died age 26 but not about the accident. Would the paper have carried a coroner's report do you think?
The census of 1871 (Neck) includes two boys 5 & 7 yrs. who do not figure in 1881which seems odd.
Is there an indication of date for the plan of the cemetery? There is already a chapel but the house is still standing.
There were two brothers, John and George each traders but according to the census in different markets. George is noted as West Indies though two children were born in Bogata. I have a photograph of an older man and three younger taken in San Francisco in perhaps 1870's and one could guess they are Meeks but so far unidentified. Is the information about John Meek petitioner readily available? It may give an idea of the kind of trade associated with John Meek.
Would Blundellsands be in the administrative area of Bootle?

The newpaper report I mentioned is about the coroner's inquest into Elizabeth Sarah's death. It wasn't clear whether it was an accident or whether she had intended to take her own life, and an open verdict was recorded.

Blundellsands is the posh end of Great Crosby, several miles further north along the coast from Bootle. Hightown is the next village along and an easy walk along the beach or through the sandhills.

The maps of the stages of development around Walbreck House are very interesting, thanks Bert for searching them out.
Though it does not make for happy reading the full article on the coroner's hearing gives a valuable insight into my grandmother's family.
My guess is they rented the house, as they seem to have moved often, does anyone know which records office I could ask about the registered owners of the time?

Warbreck House was up for sale in July 1868.

I'll follow that lead for land registration. I am trying to total the surface that was offered for sale in 1868. At first sight it is bits here and there and yet the purchase mentioned in 1876 seems to be for a block. Also the house would have been detached from the main part. Odd, when they were living there at the time.
