NUGENT / QUIRK etc of Toxteth

Post by plimmerian »

tricky one this but I'll try and put in some back ground info:

Thomas William NUGENT, died 27 Feb 1933 age as 35 years, at 126 Smithdown Road and was buried at Allerton Cemetery (NC8, plot 543). He was the first husband of my grandmother.

On their marriage certificate, 08 Aug 1920 at St Cleopas, Toxteth, he is aged 21, an able seaman living at 8 Rankin Street, his father listed as Thomas William Nugent, deceased, boatswain.

I speculate he is the Thomas Nugent aged 12 in 1911, living at 8 Dolling Street, Toxteth. He is listed born Clapham, London and as a nephew of James Simpson but his mother Johanna Simpson appears as James' wife. She went on to marry Francis George Mulligan in 1917. My half uncle told me if ever he and his siblings were naughty, my grandmother would say to them that they had the Mulligan in them!

In 1901 I suspect he is aged 2 born Deptford, London, living at 38 Clark Street, Toxteth with his parents Thomas Nugent aged 41 born USA and his mother Johanna Nugent aged 26 born Liverpool.

I suspect his birth as Thomas NUGENT was on 16 Aug 1898 at 54 Oareboro Road, Deptford, London - father Thomas Nugent, foreman on cattle boat and Johannah NUGENT (nee QUIRK).

I don't know if he was baptised in Liverpool or London and I do not know any more about his father's American roots or when his father died. I found his mother had married James Simpson in 1913 and perhaps she had died in 1948. His parents had married on 11 May 1894 at Liverpool St Matthias.

Thomas William NUGENT was the father of 3 boys and 2 girls who became step-children to my grandfather in 1938.

There were a lot of Nugents in New York it's difficult pinning him down. It may be proving especially difficult because he might have gone to sea as a youngster. The marriage irregularities found by Simone make me think that he went back to America. He could have been married previously in New York but I haven't been able to establish whether it's the same man.

Family Search:-

If he went to see when he was young it’s possible he is one of the many seamen who were wrongly included in the US 1870 Census see note on this page about these seamen:-

He appears on passenger lists on the Ellis Island website. The last record for him is from 1910. I can’t locate the image for that particular event but it will be him as it's a ship he was previously on (Majestic, built in 1890 by Harland & Wolff of Belfast, Ireland for White Star Line).
