Opinion please - occupation?

Post by MaryA »

Hi all, please let me know what you think.

In 1901 Alfred Beresford was a Fireman Stationery Engine, and in 1911 he was a Furnace Stoker at the Sugar Refinery.

But this is his marriage at St Mary's, Kirkdale in 1898 and although the writing looks clear, it doesn't give me a sensible word for his occupation.

Oooh dear, don't know how to reconcile this

Alfred timeline

1898 - address 130 Chirkdale Street - occupation Baker (at least I think it says so on that marriage certificate)
1901 - address 130 Chirkdale Street - occupation Fireman Stationery Engine
1911 - address 26 Roxburgh Street - occupation Furnace Stoker, Sugar Refinery
1923 - address from daughter Maud's marriage 71 Neston Street - occupation Baker again

Have been trying to find Alfred in 1891 census, without success, to see what his occupation was then.
Certainly agree with the Baker occupation.
Do you know what occupation Alfred's father John had?

I have to agree with the 'K' analysis.
When you look at the Brides Father's occupation and the last letter of 'clerk', it imposes nicely on the middle letter of the grooms job description ?
A lazy 'a' in front as well.
Interested in Ellison, Roberts, Riley, Raffells, Newman, Klosser, Butler, Carroll, Hough,Ruffe & McCallister.

I know that his mother was Eliza as she was living with them in 1901 but she is on her own in 1891 in 130 Chisnarle Street (I know that's not right, probably Chisenhale, but it's the way it's written) Kirkdale, RG12; Piece: 2961; Folio: 64; Page: 24 - Found it was Chirkdale Street, they were there later too.

Missing in 1881 but I believe it is them in 1871 in Kilburn, Derbyshire RG10; Piece: 3580; Folio: 28; Page: 14, with brother George 4 years old and father John, 29 born Bilbourne, Derbyshire, occupation Stone Mason.

I think it says baker too, but why two different occupations in the censuses in between?

He might have had both roles for the same sugar bakers. I can't see him on the database though:-

Well done Bert, but where was he in 1891!! Even the hints alongside the 1881 census results didn't have an Alfred Beresford in 1891.
Must have been a typo somewhere or else he just wasn't around!

Thanks for the help, particularly Bert, how stupid am I not to search for the alternative spelling.

Sorry Erika, missed responding to that one, 1871 in Kilburn his father John was a Stone Mason, and in the 1881 in Kirkdale he had become a builder.
