Binns Family of Southport

Post by PhilaKen »

I recently discovered a relative who lived in Southport. Mary Ann (Whyatt) Binns born 1885 in Chadderton, Oldham, Lancashire. She married Thomas Binns in 1905 at St. Matthew’s Chadderton, Lancashire. She moved to Southport, not sure of the year, but she was living there from the late 1930’s until at least 1964, residing at 19 Sussex Road, Southport. Looking for any Binns family members that may have information on Mary Ann or Thomas. Thank you, by the way, I am enjoying the forum, especially the old pictures.

Hi

Welcome to the forum. I'm not connected to this family. Do you know when Mary Ann died? Mary Ann Binns of 19 Sussex Road Southport died on 29 January 1973 according to the following website:-

Hi PhilaKen and welcome,
The Binns family were still in Chadderton in 1910+1.

Address: 11 Board Street, Chadderton, Lancashire
Thomas Binns Head 32 1879 Bioscope Operator - Rochdale, Lancashire
Mary Ann Binns Wife 26 1885 - Chadderton
Hilda Binns Dtr 3 1908 - Chadderton
Edward Norwood Binns Brother u/m 20 1891 Railway Goods Yard Labourer - Oldham, Lancashire

I haven't found another Binns/Whyatt birth after 1911 so it looks as though Hilda was an only child. She appears to have married:
Marriages Dec 1930: Binns, Hilda and Holmes, Harold - Oldham 8d 1373
So the family was probably still in the Oldham/Chadderton area in 1930.

Re: Hilda Binns.
FreeBMD shows two Holmes nee Binns births:
Births Jun 1931: Holmes, Derek [nee Binns] - Oldham 8d 1165
Births Jun 1936: Holmes, Charles S [nee Binns] - Barton 8c 683
Not sure about the second birth but given the surnames the family could have moved.

This could be her father's death registered in the right area for Southport up to 1934:
THOMAS BINNS
Birth year: 1878
Age: 50
Death year/qtr: 1928 / Mar
District: ORMSKIRK, Lancashire; Volume 8B; Page 1098

There was another Hilda Binns daughter of Thomas and Margaret Binns born in Oldham in 1911 just before the census a tree on Ancestry has this Hilda as marrying Harold Holmes in 1930.

Thank you so much for the information. I really do appreciate both of you for getting back to me so quickly! I know my great uncle William Beausill had gone back to England in 1932, the address he was going to was 19 Sussex Road Southport. So the Binns must have moved to Southport in 1930 or 1931 or 1932. I got thrown a curve ball when I discovered a relative in Southport as all my relatives seemed to have stayed in the Oldham area. Thank you for such a warm welcome to the forum. I had hesitated logging in as I thought no one would reply.

Hi Blue, I think the owner of that Ancestry tree may have the wrong birth and hasn't checked the 1911 census. Oldham was the registration district for Chadderton.

Births Mar 1908: Binns, Hilda - Oldham 8d 726
Births Jun 1911:
Binns , Hilda - Oldham 8d 651
Binns , Hilda - Oldham 8d 600

I've sent a message to the tree owner to see how sure they are about that marriage. They have one male child for this couple on the tree in the private setting. They may be able to provide evidence from family members or they have assumed it was right.

My brother lives just off Sussex Road, PhilaKen ... I can take a photo of the house where your relative lived if you like?

Yes, I do, too! Give me a couple of days, and I'll take my camera when I next go to visit my bro'. (It's a Victorian house, and I doubt that it has been altered structurally since your relative lived there).

I was giving a talk in Crosby Library this afternoon and had 15 minutes to spend so I looked in a few Southport directories to see info on the Binns family. Directories were usually made from information collected the previous year. I recorded all Binns in the directories

1920/21
No Binns

1924/5
Thos Binns electrician 19 Sussex Road
Thos Binns Kirkstall Road

1927/8
Thos Binns cinema organiser 19 Sussex Road
Thos Binns 7 Kirkstall Rd

1930
Frederick Binns 52 Lyndhurst Road
Mrs M Binns apartments 19 Sussex Rd
Thomas Binns sales organiser 7 Kirkstall Rd

1934
Same as 1930

1936/7
Fred M Binns 52 Lyndhurst RoaMrs M Binns apartments 19 Sussex Rd
T B Binns 62 Lynton Drive
Thos Binns 3 Dunbar Rd

1939/40
Jack Binns 71 Kew Rd plasterer
Fred Binns 52 Lyndhurst Road
Mrs M Binns 19 Sussex Rd
Thos Binns 3 Dunbar Rd

No directories during war

1951
Mrs A Binns 105 Shaws Rd
A Binns 24c Westcliffe Rd works manager
E Binns 14 Ash St
J Binns 71 Kew Rd plasterer
Mrs M Binns 19 Sussex Rd

I had to stop there time for the talk.

If I have time next week I will look at the early 1920 electoral rolls to see when your Binns arrived.

I thought the other Binns may be related so included those. My guess is that following Thomas' death your Mrs M Binns let part of her house to lodgers so that's why it says apartments.

Hi, Thank you so much for the information and I appreciate your taking the time to look up this information. The support on this board has been incredible, I truly appreciate all who have contributed to this thread. I know Zed had said in an earlier post that the house was a Victorian (I am guessing it's a larger home) so renting to lodgers seemed like a logical thing for Mary Ann to do. Once again, I can't thank the board enough for all your assistance. By the way, I hope you don't mind me asking, but what was the topic of your library talk.

I was giving a talk called "Naughty Ancestors" we all have them whether we have found them or not!

I've just found what I think is Mary Ann's death

Mary A Binns
Ormskirk registration district
March Quarter 1973

Birth date 29 October 1884

I think Thomas died in 1928

If they were buried in Southport it would probably have been in Duke Street cemetery. If we can find either of the couple's death date it would be possible to contact the cemeteries office and find their last resting place and whether there is a gravestone. If there is I'll go and take a photo for you.

Southport has Victorian houses of all sizes as it was during that era that much of the town was built.

Great topic! I recently found a relative that was in prison. My sister was terribly shocked, but I thought it was very interesting. You are correct we all have Naughty Ancestors! Mary Ann's death was 29 January 1973. This information was provided by Blue, and Thomas' death was 1928. This information was provided by dickiesam. I appreciate your providing this information and providing general description of the houses in Southport. Once again, I am so grateful for the support of this board.

The records for the local cemeteries and the crematorium are held at Southport Crematorium. If you contact them with Mary's date of death they will tell you if she is buried in Duke Street cemetery or was cremated. If she is in the cemetery and has a gravestone I will go and take a photo for you.
