Hi and welcome to the forum.
Have you tried this death?
Ellen Powell abt 1846 Jul-Aug-Sep 1912 Ashton Under Lyne Volume: 8d
Page: 495
It's not so far distant from where she was living and possibly one of the children were living there.

Re: where did Ellen Powell nee Naylor go?
Hi,
Using her birth year +/- 2 years there are only 2 deaths in Lancashire that fit between 1911 and 1951...
Death: ELLEN POWELL
Birth year: 1846
Age: 66
Death year/quarter: 1912 / Sep
District: ASHTON UNDER LYNE, Lancashire; Volume 8D; Page 495
Death: ELLEN POWELL
Birth year: 1846
Age: 84
Death year/quarter: 1930 / Sep
District: MANCHESTER SOUTH, Lancashire; Volume 8D; Page 241
Ellen may not have died at home but at a hospital or place in another locality and that is where the death would have been registered.
That 'Years married' entry in 1911 is obviously an error since she was a widow and it was lined through by the enumerator. Ellen may have meant it to indicate she had been a 'Widow 5 yrs'.

Re: where did Ellen Powell nee Naylor go?
hi thanks for the replies and the warm welcome!
I have found the following Ellen Powell in 1911 which may be the ones you mention above:
Name: Ellen Powell
Age in 1911: 64
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847
Relation to Head: Wife
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, England
Civil Parish: Ashton Under Lyne
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England
Street address: 157 Bentinck St Ashton U Lyne
Marital Status: Widowed
Occupation: Grocer
Registration district: Ashton under Lyne
and
Name: Ellen Powell
Age in 1911: 64
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847
Relation to Head: Boarder
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Hulme
Civil Parish: South Manchester
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England
Street address: 3 Alderley St Hulme M/c

It would have been a bonus if there had been no others around the same year of birth in those districts but I think this might rule them out!
Oh well,
Best wishes.

Re: where did Ellen Powell nee Naylor go?
her son Frank may have married a Margaret McGrail in 1912 and could have died in Golborne in 1951.
I have no trace of her son James after 1901
Her son William Naylor married and died in Chester without issue
Her daughter Alice married William Swift in 1894 and was in Leeds in 1911
Her daughter Ellen married Thomas Naylor in 1890 but she died later in 1911
I have no trace of her son Andrew Connor after 1891
If the census entry for children is right I think I'm still missing a few!
So much for the luck of the Irish (lol)

thank you - that may just be her as I can't find anyone in the area in 1911 with that name - might be worth a gamble!

Re: where did Ellen Powell nee Naylor go?
hello again - decided to search the rootsireland site again - previous searches had found Ellen Garvey but the fathers names didn't match
I've just tried searching for an "El" Garvey with father of John and one result in County Louth appeared for an Elenor Garvey baptised in 1844 (I had requested a year search of 1846 +5)!
Just need to save up now and send for the baptism and death details to either confirm or deny that those details belong to our Ellen
Many thanks!

Re: where did Ellen Powell nee Naylor go?
The baptism took place on 04 Sept 1844 in Dundalk - address of Bridge Street - parents John Garvey and Bridget Sheals or Sheils - sponsers Patrick and Elizabeth Hanlon.
Further research finds other siblings, one of which was Mary baptised in 1849 with an address of Dowdallshill. I'm wondering now if this is the Mary Garvey in 1911 (single, aged 62, born Louth, Ireland) in the Toxteth Park workhouse!
It is too tempting to ignore that it might just be her sister, but I'm trying to keep a level head about it!

Re: where did Ellen Powell nee Naylor go?
I have indeed found other family members that I didn't know about who arrived in Liverpool, maybe together or maybe later having discovered relatives had made good.
Don't forget to check all burials, I had a pleasant surprise as one grave also included married sisters on the headstone.
Sadly the one I suspect may be your Mary Garvey, ie the death (after 1911) matching the birth year of 1849, died 6th June, 1933 in St Joseph's House, Belmont Road, age 84 in general grave 1604 in Ford Cemetery.
Another Mary who was buried 9 April, 1917, but age a little out as was 72, from Walton Workhouse, again in a general grave 1493, also Ford.

Thanks for those!
I think I need to be sure her sister didn't marry - not finding the rootsireland site easy, still finding my feet there!
Best wishes,
Ian

Re: where did Ellen Powell nee Naylor go?
I found the will of her son, Andrew, which has proved to be most helpful. It states that he wishes "...to be buried in the same grave as my dear mother at Crow Lane Church, Newton le Willows, Lancashire..."
The first time a will purchased has been helpful!
I have something more to work on now, fingers crossed for another positive result.

Well done - phone St Helens Library to check but I believe those records will be kept there.

Just for future ref:
"I have checked the records we have here but we do not hold any records for St Marys and St Johns. Your best bet would be to contact the church directly and take it from there. They may still have them or they maybe held by the catholic diocese elsewhere."
From Local History and Archives, St Helens (April 2015)
