Richard Joshua Hughes
Richard Joshua Hughes
Hi am looking for anything on Richard Joshua Jonathon Hughes he was born between 1854 to 1856 at Liverpool. Parents unknown?..He migrated to NSW, Australia on an unknown ship? First located at Tamworth where he help build the St. Nicholas catholic church. He married in 1878 (no Marriage Cert), wife was Mary Ann Firth (i have her details). He worked as a Carpenter, Bricklayer and Miner. he had 7 children and last known alive was 5 Jan 1898 at Drake, NSW. I would love to find out who his parents are or a ship details. I know he's not Owen Hughes and Mary Stanstreet child. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would love to solve this brickwall. Faye

Re: Richard Joshua Hughes
Someone has a tree in Ancestry for your chap. States his parents were Owen Hughes 1804 and Mary Ann Stanistreet bn 1806.
Baptism for RJJ at St Peter's Lpool 18.7.1856.
1861 in Wales.
1871 Vessels.
I'm not sure if this is correct but they do list his marriage in Tamworth 1876.
added sorry I have only just noticed your post that he is not he son of Owen and Mary Ann. My apologies.

Re: Richard Joshua Hughes
Hi and welcome to the forum.
Subsequently I searched the private trees on Ancestry to discover I was searching in totally the wrong country and it should be New South Wales, Australia. My suggestion would be that you should acquire the marriage certificate as this should give further information that you have, possibly even his father's name? You may find this site useful http://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transacti ... ertificate
I have spent time searching our marriage indexes for Staffordshire and can find no reference to his marriage.FayeKen70 wrote: He married in 1877 (no Marriage Cert), wife was Mary Ann Firth (i have her details).

What evidence is there for this information?FayeKen70 wrote:he was born between 1854 to 1856 at Liverpool.
Again what evidence do you have that he isn't their child?FayeKen70 wrote:I know he's not Owen Hughes and Mary Stanstreet child.

Re: Richard Joshua Hughes
Hi everyone, Just to clear details. This is what I have.. Richard arrived on unknown ship. On his first child's birth cert in Nov, 1878 Richard is a Bricklayer aged 24..his wife, Mary 19yrs..On the 3rd child birth cert in 1884. Richard Jonathon Hughes is 29, a labourer, liverpool, England. On the last child's birth in 1896 Richard is 40 years. Miner, liverpool. States they married 2 Mar 1878 at Tamworth. The marriage Cert is not registered (Ive checked). I did find a couple of days after they where married the church burned down?? (may explain why there's no registration, dont know) On his childrens marriage certs they give his name as Richard Joshua Hughes. last known was Jan 1898 when he was in court charged with stealing coal.
Richard wasnt Owen and Mary cause their Richard died in 1896 and had a dif. wife.
Our family folk law say Richard went gold fossicking one day and never returned, the wife turned to Nursing as income for her family.

Re: Richard Joshua Hughes
Have you also investigated the records in Liverpool, New South Wales in order to eliminate that place?

Re: Richard Joshua Hughes
Hi Tina, I also noticed the 1871 census, could be a wild card. I thinking since Richard help build the St. Nicholas Church at Tamworth that maybe that where he was baptized in Liverpool? no idea, just thinking outside the box. His Joshua Name is unusual which I'm trying to fit in with his parents or grandparents also a name of Robert too(his third child John Robert's name)?. if I could find a ship that would help too. LOL..Tina wrote:Someone has a tree in Ancestry for your chap. States his parents were Owen Hughes 1804 and Mary Ann Stanistreet bn 1806.

Re: Richard Joshua Hughes
I have just sent away for the remaining children's birth certificates (4) in hope they might shed more information regarding Richard. They may narrow down his year of birth, and hope he was christened in Liverpool somewhere. What was more important there in England the Birth registration or Baptism registration? Where all children registered? just wondering, i know very little about England ....
thanks

Re: Richard Joshua Hughes
Finally the certificates have come in. Richard Joshua Hughes was born in 1856 at Liverpool. His last known occupation was a miner at Drake, New South Wales, Australia in 1898.. So back to square one who is Richards parents?..
