Godsoe; Liverpool; Help needed please.

Post by lynne99 »

I have 2 families on 1841 census in Liverpool.
Family 1
William (Gordon) Godsoe b 1799 (42) 70 Lower Harrington St. Warehouseman
Jane 28 Neither born in county.
I do know Jane was Jane Fell b c 1815 Isle of Man.
Robert 6
John 4
James2
William 8 mnths.

I have all their baptisms and Robert's marriage. James and William died as infants.
There is also
Family 2 abode; Back Bery St??
James Godsoe bc 1811, not in county,
Isabelle bc 1811 in county.
Emma Godsoe 8 months in county. Died as an infant.
James appears to have been born in St Johns New Brunswick. Isabelle was nee White.

What I would like to find out is if these 2 families are related??

I think James' father was James Gordon Godsoe. There are many similarities, but I don't have access to Canadian Births.
I have all their children and deaths/ burials or marriage for them and the other censuses.

Any help please. :D :D

Before we duplicate too much research, it might be a good idea to have summarised some of the information given by the Wonderful Experts on a different forum.

Thanks for your findings and interest.
The marriage to Isabelle White in St Nicks has the wrong name for the groom's father. That is a repeat of the groom's name. James Whitney Godsoe. James Groom was called Whitney because that was his mother's maiden name. "Eleanor Whitney". I believe his father was called James Gordon Godsoe. Don't know where I got this from. They married 1808, but I'm not sure where.

The other family has William Gordon Godsoe, who may have baptised in Liverpool at St Nicks on 26 May 1799, but name given as William Godsoe Gordon. (Wrong order) his father was James Gordon (no mention of Godsoe, but may have been missed by mistake.) Mother Ellin Jackson. From Lancs OPC. All the above were sea farers.
How can I prove or check that their (William and James Junior) fathers were the same person. Were there any other siblings I can't find them. Most of their children etc I already have. Thanks

FMP have a James Godsoe born 1809 listed in the Merchant Seamen records. He could be your man and there may be a date and place of birth.

Think it is my James. B 7 Mar 1809 in St Johns New Brunswick Canada. There were details of his description, including small pox marks, but no parents or anything else.
This was a newspaper clipping from Canada
Date November 23 1839
County Saint John, Place Saint John
Newspaper New Brunswick Courier
m. Liverpool, England, 17th Oct., James Whitney GODSOE, Saint John, N.B. / Isabella WHITE second d/o Sylvester WHITE, H.M. Customs.
I think we need to look at Canadian records for 1809 , if any one could help that would be lovely
Thanks Lynne
