Grandparent's emmigration from Liverpool 1923

Post by marg_boot »

Hello

I am in Canada trying to write my grandparent's story of their trip to Canada. I know they left Liverpool August 10, 1923 aboard the S.S. Montcalm going to Montreal Canada where they arrived August 17th.

I have researched their likely train travel from Birmingham to Liverpool and now know about train schedules and fares but have been unable to find out what time of day the Montcalm would have departed which might help me surmise the timing of their Bham to Liverpool train trip.

Does anyone have any information about sailing times or suggestions as to where I might try to find out. I have tried some CP Ship archives and have only received photos of the Montcalm but no information on departure schedules.

Thanking you in advance for any advice you can give me. Margaret

Hi Margaret and welcome,
No easy task, however my thoughts are a ship that size and carrying the amount of passengers she did would have left during high tide or near to it, during daylight hours. Possibly local papers printed Tide Tables for the River Mersey and might be worth a look.
Sorry can't help with that, hopefully someone can.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I feel sure that Bert will be right in surmising that the departure would have coincided with high tide, and I have indeed found some references to Tide Tables on the old newspapers, however these are mainly available for Liverpool only up to 1900. They might give you some ideas, if you joined the Lancashire Library, which you can do online, then you would be able to search them. Also Findmypast may have the same details.

Newspapers used to post the arrivals and departures of ships so perhaps try finding a newspaper for the date you want and see if the Montcalm is mentioned. Hopefully it will give a time of sailing. I would suspect if at all possible they would set sail in the day time.
