Re: William Campbell
Hmmm there's a shortage of marriages in the Wigan area isn't there?
This is just a note to say to discount the marriage of Catherine to a John Pilkington in 1856 as I believe in 1861 she is 33 years old, and gives Ireland for her birthplace.

Re: William Campbell
Who is given as the mother on the baptisms of the children and do the godparents on the baptism entries give any helpful clues?

Re: William Campbell
Mary A & Tina,
Thank you but I somehow doubt that is the right family.
Education Officer.
All the Baptism Records record Father as William & Mother Helen Green, I only have photo copies, & the Godparents are different for the 4 children.
Thank you Margie

I would have thought there were too many coincidences for this to be dismissed without an investigation. There is always a possibility that an enumerator has made a mistake when either taking the details or copying later. If it were me I would keep an open mind until I could find James and Frances with their children in a later census.Tina wrote:James Campbell bn Ire at Millgate Wigan in 1841 shoemaker 30, wife Frances 30 bn Ire, Mary 9 and Catherine 6 both bn county.

In addition to the coincidences, as MaryA says there is always a possibility that the fallible enumerator has made an error when transcribing the information from the Household Schedule to what you see on the Census Summary. For instance, a common contraction of William is Wm while James is written Jm. Would be quite easy to misread what the householder had entered on the Schedule.

Re: William Campbell
There's also the possibility that either Helen or Frances could be a middle name. My great-great grandmother, Mary Jane, used Mary on some records and Jane on others.
There is a death recorded on LancsBMD in Wigan for a Frances Campbell, aged 38, in 1843. Age could be different to that recorded on the 1841 census due to the rounding up/down of ages.

Karen.
Yes I have tried looking for James & Francis in later Census but found nothing, I hold my hand up, looks like you have all suggested they were wrongly transcribed in 1841.
