Kenny Family from where in Ireland??
Kenny Family from where in Ireland??
I am hoping someone can help me? I have been researching my Nan's family history on and off for the last year after she asked me to try and find out where in Ireland her Dad's family where from. I was hoping to have the answer for Christmas but have hit a brick wall so I was hoping someone on here might have a clue.
Her dad Patrick Kenny was born on 1901 to Patrick Kenny b1863 and Margaret Kenny (nee Murphy) b1878 both of who where born in West Derby. They lived in Carr Lane, West Derby original with Margaret's parents Ann and Thomas Murphy.
Patrick (b 1863) was the son of Patrick Kenny b 1825 and Mary Kenny (nee Low) b 1831, they were married in St Oswald RC Church in 1859 and both where born in Ireland but I can find anything to tell me where. I believe Mary died in 1895 and Patrick in about 1868/9 but I don't have a death cert or anything for either. They also had a daughter Mary b 1863 and on the 1871 census there is a Michael F Kenny listed as Mary's son born 1850 but he is not with them in the 1861 census and that doesn't make much sense. They also lived in Carr Lane, West Derby in 1871 but in 1861 where living at Croxteth Hall Lane where I think Patrick was working.
Mary Kenny (nee Low) parents where a Mary and Edmund Low and Patrick's parents where a Bridget and John (?) Kenny.
If anyone can help I would be very grateful. I am based in Leamington so any clues you could give that I could follow up when I am next in Liverpool would be really great. Thanks in advance
Laura

Hi Laura and welcome,
Re:
And the YoBs you have given for Patrick and Mary Kenny are derived from censuses?
I am assuming that in all the censuses you have found them in their place of origin/birth is simply shown as Ireland? Because civil registration of BMDs didn't start in Ireland until 1864 one has to rely mainly on parish records. Many have been transcribed but many have not.
The name Kenny was relatively common in the midlands and the west in the counties of Offaly [known as King's County], Roscommon and Galway, and Tyrone in what is now Northern Ireland. Of course it also occurred to a lesser extent throughout the other counties of Ireland. The 1901 Irish census of all counties gives a total head count of 8,919 Kennys [of all ages and gender].

Re: Kenny Family from where in Ireland??
Playing around with the names Patrick Kenny, Margaret Kenny (a possible sister on 1861 Census) as children of John and Bridget and Mary Donagan or Dunigan from the same household in 1861 on http://www.rootsireland.ie/ they may have come from County Galway there are matches within a few years which are acceptable. Kenny is a difficult surname to research and Irish records are limited so it will be very difficult to prove which county they came from if none of them have the county recorded on the English records.

Re: Kenny Family from where in Ireland??
Hi and welcome to the forum,
Looking at the marriage cert. Blue posted above, from St Oswald's, a pity it didn't show Patrick's mother's maiden name, but it would seem that Mary's mother's maiden name was also Kenny, a possible family connection do you think?

Re: Kenny Family from where in Ireland??
The 1871 Census showing Patrick Kenny bn 1863 with a mother Mary and sister Mary bn 1861...
RG10 Piece 3847 Folio 168 Page 29
Address: Carr Lane East, West Derby, Liverpool
Mary Kenny Head Widow 50 1821 - Ireland
Michael F Kenny Son U/m 21 1850 - Ireland
Mary Kenny Dtr 10 1861 - England
Patrick Kenny Son 8 1863 - England
This is the family Laura queried as to how/where Michael F Kenny bn abt 1850 fits into the scene? Is he actually from a previous marriage and stepson to the mother? Need the marriage cert to establish whether Patrick was a widower or a bachelor when he married Mary Low in 1859.
And the mother Mary is shown as bn 1821 whereas in 1861 her YoB was 1829?

I've got one free search left for Roots Ireland. It's a pity the site has changed making it more difficult for third party helpers. We could have directed a lot of customers their way on here and other forums.

Re: Kenny Family from where in Ireland??
Re that 1871 census... I haven't yet found an 'event' for Michael F Kenny anywhere, in BMDs or censuses. Wondering if the F is a slip of the enumerator's pen and it should be a J?
In 1881 there's an Owen Kenny [lodger] in the household...
Mary Kenny Head Widow 50 1831 Housekeeper (Lodg) (Domestic)) - Ireland
Patrick Kenny Son u/m 18 1863 Ag Lab - West Derby,
Mary Kenny Dtr 20 1861 Farmers Serv Indoor Domestic - West Derby
Michael Clarke Lodger Md 40 1841 Ag Lab - Ireland
Owen Kenny Lodger u/m 50 1831 Ag Lab - Ireland
Henry Shannon Lodger u/m 33 1848 Ag Lab - Ireland
Michael Smith Lodger u/m 21 1860 Ag Lab - Ireland
Martin Smith Lodger u/m 51 1830 Ag Lab - Ireland
I still have a few credits left on Roots Ireland. Could this be Owen Kenny?
Church Baptism: Kinai, Owen 1830 - Co. Roscommon
Kinai could be a typical anglised corruption of the Irish spelling of Kenny.

You guys are incredible! I thought I would be lucky if one person responded but just logged on after a day of dull meeting in work had all these responses. Thanks to you all for the help. Will have a proper read through of everything when I get home but really grateful for your help.
Re: Kenny Family from where in Ireland??
From playing with Roots Ireland there was a Patrick and Margaret Kenny children of John and Bridget Kenny born in the RC parish of Tuam in County Galway. The Irish Tithe Applotment records have a John Kenny living in the townland of Tierboy on the Tierboy Estate also known as Terboy or Tyerboy, in the civil parish of Tuam in County Galway c1831. No sign of him or any other Kennys there on the Griffith's Valuation c1855.
