Pubs on Scotland Road
Hello,
Just joined the forum and would like to know if anyone can help me identify the name of the pub my grandfather ( Henry Miller) had at 386 Scotland Road. He was there in the 1901 census.
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Pubs on Scotland Road
Welcome to the Forum, Chris.
I have a book, the City of Liverpool Licensing Report Book, dated 1909 listing pubs, addresses, licensees and other data. There is no entry for 386. Have you any other evidence of his occupation and address? How about the 1911 census?
I have skimmed through the long list of Scottie Road pubs in the book but could not spot his name. There is no index to names of licensees but I will have another skim in the morning.

1891 census, Henry living at Botanic Grove, Plumber.
RG12; Piece: 2993; Folio: 112; Page: 23;
Wondering if he has any connection to the plumber living at the premises (1900 Gores), perhaps he's opened a beer house, he would still need a licence, but not necessarily be connected to a brewery.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Many beerhouses were open, as Bert says he would still need a licence, but may have been selling from their front room rather than a public house.
Liverpool 1900 directory gives a Henry Miller at "The Lamb" 62 Titchfield Street, which is not too far away, could be the same person.
It might be a good idea for you to check the Directories at the Record Office where they have most years and you may be able to identify the address you want even if somebody else had it in a previous or later years.

Re: Pubs on Scotland Road
By 1909 the Lamb at 62 Titchfield Street was not listed as licensed premises.

Added:
A skim through the Licensing Book gives: 376 Mill Street [Toxteth], Wellington Vaults, Henry Miller, Manager [i.e. an employee of the owners], owner J. Jones & Co, lessees from Luke Lees of Rock Ferry. An amendment in handwriting alters the owner to Walker Cain.
D
More: This pub seems to be trading under the name of the Wellington or Wellington Vaults.

Re: Pubs on Scotland Road
Hi
The nearest to 386 Scotland Rd is the pub called The Saddle Inn, which is numbered 381. Hope this helps! Also there is another pub with the same name if memory serves me right, on the corner of Vernon & Dale St.

Re: Pubs on Scotland Road
Just a thought, but would that be on the other side of the road or would the numbering have been different then?seeker wrote: The nearest to 386 Scotland Rd is the pub called The Saddle Inn, which is numbered 381.

Re: Pubs on Scotland Road
Same 1909 book as before has 381: Saddle Inn, Philip Armstrong, lessee, free. Later a Higson's pub.
Looks like no change in numbering and I think you are right about opposite side, Mary.
