Charles Howell 1797-1872

Would any forum member know of any records that would help me learn more about the early life of my 2x great grandfather Charles Howell born in Fens Heath Wales in 1797? So far, I've found census records from 1841 to 1871, a marriage certificate for his marriage to Sarah Griffin who I think was his second wife, birth certificates for two children with Sarah Griffin, Charles Howell Howell (born1857) and Sarah Howell Griffin (born 1852 ) plus 1855 Slater's directory.

The 1841 census shows him as aged 44, living with his wife Elizabeth in Islington Liverpool and working as a cabinet maker.

In 1851 census he is a widower and an eating house keeper at 27 Tithebarn Street, Liverpool, where he remained until about 1858-61.

In 1861 census he is married to Sarah Griffin, the marriage took place in 1861, and is now retired, living at 13 Catter or Cotter Street, Toxteth Park ward Liverpool.

By 1871 census he is living at 62 Russell Street in Rodney Street Liverpool ward and his death certificate shows he died in 1872.

I'm particularly interested in the period before 1841 and between 1841 and 1851. Advice about sources of illustrations of a typical eating house on Tithebarn Street in 1850s and 60s would also be much appreciated.

Using free BMD, I have found 2 deaths for Elizabeth Howell, in Liverpool.
Does not give much info, but a start.

I have looked on Anx, but only found his marriage to Sarah Griffin in 4th Oct 1861. His father called Charles.
from this I looked for his baptism and found

Hi Agogo, in the 1853 Gores/Kellys Directory Charles was at the eating house in Tithebarn St. Just to give you a time frame.
Tithebarn St lists all the chambers, no occupations for anyone there or at the street numbers. His premises were 2 doors down from Liver Court which may help when looking at maps. One would think he would have had an awning out the front of the shop which many did back then. Exchange Station opened in 1850. Not sure what it was called then.

Nice little background picture from Tina there, I've looked in a few earlier directories.

1843 Liverpool Directory
Charles Howell, Cabinet Maker, 10 Juvenal Street (this isn't far from Islington you said they were there in 1841)

There is a gap in my collection prior to that date, there is no entry for him in the 1827 Gores Directory or 1825 Baines, so perhaps it was after that date that he moved from Wales to Liverpool.

You are stars Mary, Tina and Lynne. As a result of your help, I've now got quite a good timeline for Charles for the 1841 census to his death in 1871. Thank you very much. Mary's information about the 1827 Gores and 1825 Baines Directories also helps to narrow down when he arrived in Liverpool. I also have narrowed down the likely date of death of his first wife, Elizabeth and will be able to get her death certificate. I shall keep trying to fill in some of the other gaps in his history.
