Smith family in Liverpool
Smith family in Liverpool
I am trying to find info on Walter James Smith who lived at 83,Pitt Street with his wife Florence on the 1881 census
Their eldest daughter was baptized on October 12th 1881 at St Michael s
When their eldest son was baptized at St Peters on August 7th 1884 they lived in Denison Street
On the 1891 census they lived at 54, Elstow Street with 3 more children,John 5,Henry 3 and Mary 1, I can not find Baptisms for these 3
On the 7th January 1896 Walter died, then on 11th of February Florence died leaving 9 children orphaned as they had had Isabel,Mabel,Sadie and Carrie while still at Elstow Street
All the girls were sent to Canada, not sure what happened to the 2 eldest boys, but Henry (our gr/grandfather)was sent to live with his mothers parents in Kenilworth Warwickshire
As the surname is Smith it is hard to find the right family, but what i was after was the church records for the baptisms, burials and info on whether the children would had gone to a church orphanage or home, before going to Canada and travel details
Family rumour is the church was involved getting them to Canada and also once there
Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated

Re: Smith family in Liverpool
Hi and welcome to the forum.
The baptism of Annie Louse Smith was on 12 October, 1881, and her birth was 30 August, 1881, parents Walter John and Florence Smith, of 83 Pitt Street, occupation Warehouseman.
The 1891 census gives the following information
54 Elstow Street, Kirkdale - all children born Liverpool
Sharing a house with William, 38 and Alicia, 40, Bissett born Scotland
Walter J Smith Head M 32 Railway Checker Derbyshire
Florence Wife M 31, Warwickshire
Annie L daur 9
William J son 6
John son 5
Henry son 3
Mary J daur 1
RG12; Piece: 2966; Folio: 53; Page: 48
To discover Florence's maiden name you need her birth certificate which you can order from www.gro.gov.uk at a cost of £9.25. I would suggest that you state that the GRO ref is not known and then you will be able to give the parents names, as known, and the date of birth and they should find it with that information. This will help you discover where the marriage took place as it may not have been in Liverpool.
We have a few suggestions of websites to check, you may wish to try some of them, although many of the records may be held at the Liverpool Record Office, 3rd Floor William Brown Street Library.

Re: Smith family in Liverpool
Hello richie307,
Looking at the names of the children of William and Florence leads me to believe that Carrie is actually Caroline. There are no Carrie Smith births in Liverpool in the period 1891 to 1896 but there are a couple of Carolines.
There is a departing passenger record that might be her...
CAROLINE SMITH
Age: 6
Birth year: 1894
Departure date: 24th May 1900
Departure port: LIVERPOOL
Destination port: QUEBEC
Country: CANADA
Ship's name: CORINTHIAN
She is with a group of 8 girls aged between 6 and 13 with different surnames apart from one, a 10 year old ? Louisa Smith [first name difficult to decipher]. If the age is right this probably isn't your Annie Louise.
Her sister Isobel might be this Isabella. This time this child is with a large group of children aged between 6 and 16. From experience I'd say this was a 'forced emigration' group.
ISABELLA H SMITH
Age: 11
Birth year: 1895
Departure date: 24th May 1906
Departure port: LIVERPOOL
Destination port: QUEBEC
Country: CANADA
Ship's name: DOMINION
It should be possible to locate the ships' arrivals in Canada where more info on the groups of children may be available, who was in charge and what the sending institution was, etc.

Thanks Richie for joining our forum. You have come to the right place for help with your family tree. What a sad story, children being sent to Canada.

Re: Smith family in Liverpool
Thanks for your replies i will look into your suggestions
Walter's wife was baptized Flora Overton, from Kenilworth Warwickshire she married Walter between 1875 and 1881,but i can not find a record of it anywhere on FreeBMD or on church records in Kenilworth
I have been in touch with the 2 grandchildren of Anne Louise Smith in Canada but they have no info of when she arrived in Canada, only that it was through the church, the children were split up and they had a very bad time, she was sent to work on a farm
Anne married a Alfred Currell in Canada about 1900 when she was about 18 so i think the family must have been sent between 1896-1899

Re: Smith family in Liverpool
If they moved from Warwickshire to Liverpool it is possible one of them was already married and perhaps they were not able to.

Re: Smith family in Liverpool
Have to ask.... How do you know that Florence Smith is Flora Overton? Where did her maiden name come from?richie307 wrote:Walter's wife was baptized Flora Overton, from Kenilworth Warwickshire she married Walter between 1875 and 1881.
For the crew:
Birth: FLORA OVERTON
Birth year/qtr: 1858 / Sept quarter
District: WARWICK, Warwickshire
Volume: 6D; Page 435
But we also have this...
Birth: FLORENCE EMILY OVERTON
Birth year/qtr: 1857 / June
District: BIRMINGHAM, Warwickshire
Volume: 6D; Page: 15
And she married either EDWIN MADELEY or CHARLES JOHN BOSTON
Marriage: FLORENCE EMILY OVERTON
Marriage year/qtr: 1880 / Mar
District: BIRMINGHAM, Warwickshire
Volume: 6D; Page: 84
So fishing... surmising....
Haven't yet found Florence Madely/Boston in 1881. However, I think she married Charles Boston because in 1881 he is living with an Overton family as a visitor with his son Frederick Boston bn 1880/81, shown as a grandson to the head of household, Anne Overton, widow.
RG11 Piece 2969 Folio 64 Page 14
Address: 4 Shearsby Place, Birmingham, Warwickshire
Charles Boston Visitor - Married 26 1855 Wire Drawer - Worcestershire
Frederick Boston Grandson 0 1881 - Birmingham, Warwickshire
In 1891 I think Charles J is here with a 'wife' Mary and 3 children [eldest bn 1883], but haven't found a marriage or any sign of a son Frederick.

Re: Smith family in Liverpool
Hi DS,
I think this correct,
Flora Overton's baptism, Parents, James Overton, Eliza 1859.
James Overton, Eliza Dencer, 1857, Coventry, 6d 461.
1868, James Overton married Sarah Jane Checkley, 1868, Warwick, 6d 498.
1901 census finds Harry Smith living with,
Jane Overton
RG13 P2936 F19 Page16
Various census will have wives Eliza and Sarah Jane.

Re: Smith family in Liverpool
Thanks again for your interest
How i know that Florence's maiden was Overton, is on the 1901 census Henry also called Harry was with his grandparents in Kenilworth
Although i have ancestry at home i do not have worldwide,so i though i could go to the local library and use it there on Canadian censuses to find the girls there and hopefully passenger lists
Does anyone know which church would be near to Elstow Street in Liverpool as the relatives in Canada reckon he was the organist in the local church, which is why perhaps the church helped out with the children after the deaths of the parents

Re: Smith family in Liverpool
With that sort of reputation I had wondered if there might have been an obituary in the local newspaper, however online I don't see one.
This will give you an idea of the churches nearby http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co. ... z/gi79.htm Elstow Street is in G8, the nearest would be a chapel in the same square, but it doesn't seem to be named.
You can cross reference the churches for religion on the genuki site.
