Liverpool Carters.

I have ancestors that were carters in Liverpool in the 19th century. I know about the statue that has been put up, but I would like to know if there is any way I can trace the life of my particular carters. Richard Harrison b 1810 and his sons were all carters and cart owners. They lived in Gascoyne St. Where would the horse live?? I have a photo of a person with a cart but it has darkened over time. Is there any way I can improve it? I expect you all to be a fount of knowledge, but I know you are.

Thanks Bert. I am looking for info about the carters in Gascoyne St, if anyone has any info. Do you know if they make little models of the new statue?? I would love to buy one and I'm sure others would as well.

I have a photo of a person with a cart but it has darkened over time. Is there any way I can improve it?

If you have a scanner check the settings, there may be one as there was in an old one I had, giving an option to rectify problems, play about and see if you can find it. It improved some photographs I had enormously.

Re. dark photographs. I find that re-taking the picture with, say, an iPhone automatically adjusts the image and makes it far clearer. I had one photo that was almost black; I couldn't even tell what the subject matter was. Suddenly I had a very clear image of a gentleman on a horse.

Richard was b 1810 father Thomas mother Ellen. Baptised St Paul's Liverpool abode Old Hall St Father labourer.

His siblings
Jenny 1797 Abode Plumbe St. Sawyer d 1802
Margaret (Margery) 1799 Plumb St Sawyer d 1801
James 1801 Plumb St Sawyer d 1801
Thomas 1802 Plumb St Sawyer died 1856?
James 1806 Leeds St Cow keeper.
Jane 1808 On 1841 and 1851 census.
Edward 1813 Old Hall St Labourer.

Richard was a carter of Eaton St in 1841 census. Died 1860 buried Toxteth Park Cemetery. I can't find now where the carter went to. Census say labourer, but I know someone was a carter.

There is an Elizabeth Harrison b 1793 and Margaret Harrison b 1795, both in Seaforth - cannot find any more details of them

The Richard Harrison born 1844 ish and married to Mary Jane Howard lived in Gascoigne St, 1871,81,91 census, was not recorded as a Carter.

Hi Bert, as you say Richard Thomas Harrison b 1840 (have his birth certificate) and married Mary Jane was not a Carter. . Perhaps you could tell me who in the family were carters, because I thought there were some. Sorry if I have mislead any one

I'm not sure where this is going, but, 1881 census Richard Harrison had a lodger, Joseph Ambrose, Carter. His mothers maiden name was Ellen Howard, any relation to Mary Jane, Richard's wife?
Joseph had a brother, Henry, also a Carter. are they in your tree?

Hi, what I have about the Ambrose family.
Ellen Howard b 1815 Liverpool, baptised St Peter's father Richard Howard Mother Ellen nee Banks.
Married William in 1836 St Nicholas, Liverpool. I have his death as 1849, but not exact details. It would fit in with the remarriage in 1850. She was Mary Jane's aunty. Richard (MJ father) and Ellen were brother and sister.
Ellen and Samuel Jenkins had a child Thomas in 1850. Plus 5 Ambrose children.

The Ambrose family have a connection to the occupation of Carter and Gascoigne St, the other brother Richard was a wheelwright 1871,census, Gascoigne St, very handy for a Carter to have one of those in the family.

A baby buried at Walton Park, 2 April, 1882, Thomas Henry Ambrose, 62 Dryden St, Liverpool.
Not sure which Richard he belongs to.

Must be Richard b 1842 to William and Ellen, I think as the other Richard I have would have only been 14. I have no record of Dryden Street, but they did move around a lot. There first William, b 1870, d 1872 was also buried Walton Park cemetery.
Brilliant detective work Bert. Could you look for a Prescot coroners inquest on John Mitchell died 1845 from Tetanus.
