Michael Gosling - father James Gosling
Michael Gosling - father James Gosling
Hi folks, been doing my family tree for quite a few years. Hit a brick wall a few years ago on the Gosling side of my tree, recently I had another (Irish) brick wall which finally I had help to solve but managed.
Anyway I've decided to have another crack at the Gosling side which is my paternal side, my G-G Grandad was named Michael Goslin(g) b.1836 supposedly in Birkenhead. Every census I've seen he has birthplace as Birkenhead, Cheshire.
I cannot find a birth record for him anywhere, I have his marriage cert, his death cert, and my G-Grandads Birth cert with Michael's name on it.
On his marriage cert his father is listed as James Goslin (sic) I have seen the 1851 census and Michael, James, and a child named Margaret are all listed in Mount Pleasant Workhouse as paupers no mention of a wife or mother ??. I would like to find a birth record for Michael then I can send for his birth cert and finally name his mother and father for definite and then start to trace them, any help would be appreciated as I really am stuck.

Re: I've hit a brick wall........
Hello Lee and welcome.
Re Michael Goslin(g) b.1836 supposedly in Birkenhead. Because his birth was before civil registrations began in September qtr of 1837 there will not be a GRO
birth certificate as such. The nearest thing to look for would be a baptism cert with his parents' names. This may give his mother's maiden name but that would be unusual.

Re: I've hit a brick wall........
Hi dickiesam, thanks for the reply. Where can I find a Baptism cert ?? or where can I look for one. On the marriage cert I have Michael was married at St Wereburgh chapel in Birkenhead. ??
Re: I've hit a brick wall........
I have looked for a baptism in the Cheshire Baptisms without success so far. There is the possibility he may not have been baptised.Lee Gosling wrote:Hi dickiesam, thanks ght- for the reply. Can you post the 1851 census details for Michael, his father James and his sister? Margaret. What was James' YoB and where was he born?
Have you found Michael with parents in 1841? If James was from Ireland, as I believe he was, it is possible that is where Michael was also born and they aren't in the 1841. It is possible Michael thought he was from Birkenhead but that may be where the family arrived. It could be his earliest memory and is a mistake I have come across before.

Hi Lee,
Have you considered this baptism, keep in mind, the first Catholic church to open in Birkenhead was St Werburgh's, 1837, the church opened its doors for business. Prior to that I believe they held an occasional mass at the ruins of Birkenhead Priory. Michael may still have been born in Birkenhead, just Baptised in Liverpool.

Re: I've hit a brick wall........
Hi and welcome to the forum.
There is an excellent library in Blackburn with access to family history archives. They will have free access to Ancestry on their computers and you could also ask if they have Findmypast also included as many libraries do, for free. I have found Findmypast to have the best coverage for Cheshire records, as Ancestry has many for Lancashire.
A few tips on what may be available to researchers could be useful to you http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =25&t=6937

Re: I've hit a brick wall........
The 1851 census when Michael appears to be in the workhouse gives his place of birth as Liverpool. Given the baptism at St Peter's Priory I went looking for a possible marriage and other children.
Before civil registration began in 1837 all marriages were in the Church of England for them to be legal in less you were a Jew or a Quaker
St Nicholas C of E 30 August 1824
James Goslan mariner and Mary Bourns
Thomas Gosline born 19 Aug 1826 christened 27 Aug 1826 St Mary RC
James Gosline born 17 Dec 1828 christened 4 Jan 1829 St Mary RC
James Goslin born 14 April 1830 christened 25 April 1830 at St Patrick RC
Michael you already have
Mary Ann born 12 May 1839 christened 26 may 1839 St Peter Priory
I think there was. Margaret as well who I haven't written down. all the above are available on Ancestry.

Re: Michael Gosling - father James Gosling
If you are able to make a trip to Liverpool there is always the possibility that the Workhouse Records may give some clue as to whether James was a widower when they were admitted.

Re: Michael Gosling - father James Gosling
Well, I'm gobsmacked !!! I've searched and mooched about for years trying to find out more information about this side of my family, I was beginning to think it would never go any further and it was only a chance meeting last week with a cousin who I rarely see and she told me for her dads birthday a few years ago they paid for a genealogist to 'do' the family tree, I asked how far back he had gone with the Gosling side and she said until Michael, after that the trail went cold. This gave me the kick to try again, and I'm really grateful.

I came across this page many years ago don't know if anyone on here knows about the Liverpool Orphans put down the local pits here in Lancashire, my Great Grandad (Michael's son) isn't listed here but he was also plucked from a Liverpool orphanage and put down the local mines. He wasn't an orphan, his mother went to America and put her four kids in a catholic orphanage in Liverpool somewhere, my next task might be to find out where. I might take Mary's advice and visit Liverpool next time I'm dragged over to Liverpool 1..... Thank You !!!!

Re: Michael Gosling - father James Gosling
Education Officer : Are the records you have posted all from Liverpool ?? And are all the churches in Liverpool ??
Re: Michael Gosling - father James Gosling
I think the problem may have been you were looking in Birkenhead not in Liverpool and also the variants on the spelling when people are illiterate. The James Gosling in 1851 in the workhouse states he is married and also that he was born in City of Dublin so that would give you somewhere else to look. You cAn also look for the children to see who they married and James states he is a mariner at his marriage so lots to keep you busy.
Just seen you next post all the baptisms and the marriage I found are in Liverpool. Michael in 1851 and 1861 states he was born in Liverpool. They are all Ancestry so if you go to your local library you should be able to download them.
