Alms houses

Post by MSteele »

Hi,

Would anyone know if there is a link between the workhouse on Brownlow Hill and the Cambridge Street Alms Houses? I've a relative who died in 1880 and in the probate record she is recorded as 'formerly of the Cambridge Street alms houses'.

I'd also be grateful to find out if there are any specific records still remaining?

Thanks

It may be that she was in the workhouse as an infirmary, which is what it also was, particularly if there was no family to care for her whilst ill.

There are a number of entries in the Record Office Catalogue http://liverpool.gov.uk/libraries/archi ... y-history/ but most appear to be photographs that might interest you.

It would be the Admissions and Discharges Register itself for the workhouse that might give you more information and these are indeed held at the Liverpool Record Office on microfilm.

It does, as Mary writes, sound as though she was a resident of the almhouses and admitted to the workhouse infirmary for medical care.

Thanks for the advice, I will trawl through the records next time I am in the library (might even be Friday). Just to add a slight twist to the tale I have been told that there is a photograph with a picture of said almshouses which 'apparently' have a sign on the house with our family name on it!

Jane Steele died in Southport in 1880, and I've asked my father if he knows who or why she was there at the time of her death..or even where she was - I wait with baited breath.
