Hi
Wading through the Parish Marriage Records for Chelmsford Cathedral I came across a marriage which recorded 15 yes 15 witnesses Is this some sort of record I wonder

The groom came from "the City of London" and married Ann Smith. Both the bride and groom "left their mark". The marriage was about 1810 (one of the very early certificates with little information) and when I first looked at it I thought a child had scribbled but no there was 15 badly written signatures across the bottom and upwards in the side margins A bit difference to form filling today.

How interesting. I'm imagining a party, a lot of merry (maybe in more ways than one) youngsters who suddenly decided a wedding was in order. The all trooped along to the Church and all insisted on signing their names
Probably totally make believe, don't disillusion me
