I don't think the little one died from symptoms from her father, rather a very high temp caused by pneumonia on the chest, no anti bio's back then.
They either battled through as kiddies and adults or died.

Hi

I am Betty Rose Edwards grandaughter,
I have read this amazing family history.

I am not sure if this is correct, but my nan Betty and my Uncle Clarence told me stories of julious, I always thought they were wonderful stories... Not realising how true they could be.

My nan traveled to Portugal often to find the history behind the the de Castro's! She believed that Julio was the iligitamate son of the king of Portugal julio 's mother was the kings mistress. Although I don't know if this true, however there is something on the internet about, I haven't managed to read this all.
My grandmother said that Julio was born in Portugal and because there was a scandal and the king had an affair and Julio was his son the aire to the thrown. This was more than likely frowned upon thus Julio and him mum moved to the uk .

But my grandmother and uncle Clarence were and constanly told us the tale so that we would never forget the pair were admiment of this and my nan never uncovered the truth behind the de Castro's

They said he became a corrispondant and was a murdered in prison because he was a spy as well for the Germans

Please get in touch Jacky I might be able to help

Oh thats a shame, we have always wondered if the stories were true...

As kids we thrived on the history. Its a shame because I doubt we shall ever get to the bottom of the family mystery. I hope she logs in. I have photos of him and hs wife I believe. Iwas hoping to post them on here but was unable to as I am not quite sure if u can.

Fingers crossed

The newspaper articles appear in Liverpool Echo 24th February 1916 and Liverpool Daily Post 3rd March 1916. (British Newspaper Archives)

Julio de Castro is said to be a 36 yar old Portuguese of Wright Street Egremont. He is a foreign correspondent in an Anglo-Brazilian company in Liverpool which acted as agent for the father of the other accused Enrique Caesar Rojas a Peruvian. The father was a Rubber Dealer. This is the connection between the two accused.

Charged with attempting to carry a letter out of the country without authority. Rojas was going back to Peru via Lisbon and Castro asked him to take a letter to his father, S H F Cast, 160 Alfandega Road, Lisbon.

Other details are given re Castro...
Born in Lisbon in 1879,he lost both parents when he was a baby, he was taken charge of by Cast who saw to his education up to age 17 after which he completed his training under an Englishman in Lisbon. For the last 11 and a half years he had been employed at one office in Liverpool. He was married and had 8 children.
The police said that "Cast's son though a naturalised British subject, was fighting with the German forces."

The contents of the letter, other than the last words "when replying please do not refer to this letter on account of the censor", could not, according to the Stipendary, be read aloud "in the interests of this country"

Castro and Rojas were sentenced to 3 months imprisonment with hard labour.

I have also found reference to Enriques Rojas being tried and imprisoned (6 months) in Leipzig Germany in June 1915 for not denouncing an Englishman George Crossan who was found guity of espionage. Rojas seems to have been a very shady character.

Have just joined forum and have spent half an hour just reading this one thread. Amazing story and what a lot of input - especially the final posting! Could be the start of a Forsyth novel ---- especially the names. Well done all and thanks for a riveting read - shame the Jackie never came back to say a thanks to you all - perhaps she's still trying to come to terms with it all.

Hello:

I was researching the Edenborough family. In a divorce case from 1876, Henry Bolton Edenborough sued his wife, the former Charlotte Lucy Bradford, and the co-respondent was Jules de Castro. The proceedings took place in London, and both defendants disputed the charge. I have no record that the decree absolute was issued. My Castro is not the person discussed in this forum, and apparently, not even the father. He is not the Joseph De Castro (wife Sarah) listed in the 1871 and 1881 Census records. I did come across a Jules de Castro of Paris, France, who was mentioned in a civil suit against one of his brothers during the 1890s. Could he still be a relative?

If anyone can provide information about this Jules de Castro, please advise.
