James Marks 1816-1861

Post by russellci »

Can anybody point me to the Manchester equivalent of this forum?
James Marks, born in Ireland according to the 1841 census, married Mary Crowley in Liverpool St Peter, 8 Feb. 1836. He is listed as a Shoemaker. By 1841 he and Mary are living in Manchester.
The marriage in St Peter would seem to suggest that he moved with his family to Liverpool first before going on to Manchester.
Thanks
Claire

I think that is a brill find Tina! Well done. :D

Only two deaths that fit for James...
Deaths Dec 1853: Marks, James - Manchester 8d 257
Deaths Mar 1861: Marks, James - Manchester 8d 194

Since his son Martin was born in 1854...
Births Jun 1854: MARKS, Martin - Manchester 8d 266
It would be 'hopeful' to think James died in 1861, when in reality either death could be be him. :(

I believe I read some time ago that many Manchester 1851 Census Summary Forms were apparently damaged by water and are very difficult to read and transcribe and in some cases virtually impossible to use as a source. I understand the Manchester and Lancashire FHS undertook the task of scrutinising each damaged page and producing 'modern' type-written equivalents of the damaged forms wherever possible. If you look for James Marks bn 1815 in the 1851 census on Findmypast with a Mary Marks also in the household, you will see such a page.

Bert made the comment about the poor quality of the Ancestry scans from the original documents.... "Hope this helps if you haven't found the 1851, bad image, can just make out, Marks and Shoemaker.
HO107, P2230, Page32."
