Hi,
Re: Name: John Tattersall
Death Date: May 1940
Vessel: SS Marconi
Series: BT334; Box 0095; Maritime deaths 1854-1972

Marconi refers to the name of the vessel he was crew on when he died. You will not be able to get a death cert because the death is not in the GRO Death Index. He may have died as the result of an accident or illness while on board and outside British Territorial waters.

The SS Marconi was sunk by a torpedo in May 1941 after leaving a convoy.
There's a report on the sinking here... http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/ships/942.html

The Marconi was a merchant ship, owned by Lamport and Holt Line. It was torpedoed and sunk in 1941. Can't be of any more help than that. Maybe John did die at sea?

I haven't found his name recorded on the CWGC site as a death from enemy action. That would suggest his death was from 'natural causes' [accident or illness] while at sea.

Hi Joan

I don't know if this is your man? Taken from the GRO Marine Indices for the year 1940

Name Age Ship Page No.
John Tattersall 50 Marconi 60

On the transcription his YOB is out. If you can contact the GRO they may be able to help.

Good luck

To avoid any confusion, the information I found is from the Board of Trade Index of Maritime Deaths, not from the GRO. The information matches that on his MN Record Card that you found.
