Register Office location 1960's

Post by Felix+Co »

Hello everyone,
Am new here and this is my first post, so hope I do it right, please feel free to correct me if not :)

I have just received a wedding certificate for ancestors from 1963 that states they were married in the register office, Liverpool South.

Where would this be? I thought there was only one register office in Liverpool. I know there was one in Mount Pleasant in the 60's, so could this be it?

Also, I have a birth certificate from the 1920's that states the child was born in Garston, u.d. What does the u.d. mean?

I no longer live in Liverpool - left several years ago - so am unable to do any local searching etc.

Many thanks for your time.
Felix

The official listing at the back of Kelly's Directory for 1968 shows the following:
Liverpool North: 7 Brougham Terrace
Liverpool South: 64 Mount Pleasant -same address for Exchange sub-district
Toxteth park sub-district: 15 High Park Street [a.k.a. Toxteth Town Hall, now a community resource centre]
Sefton Park sub-district: Sefton General Hospital [long gone]
Wavertree sub-district: Town Hall, Wavertree [this has been a pub for some years now!]

Re:

For future research etc...

District Registry Offices in the city of Liverpool:
Liverpool > Sep1837 to Sep1934
Liverpool North > Dec1934 to Sep1969
Liverpool South > Dec1934 to Sep1969
Liverpool > Sep 1969 to Dec1969
Toxteth Park > Mar1881 to Sep1922
West Derby > Sep1837 to Sep1934
Bootle Lancs > Dec1934 to Mar1980

And at the posh end....
Crosby > Dec1934 to Mar1980 :)

Since a part of Lancashire, including Liverpool, was incorporated into the new county of Merseyside in April 1974, the following have been created...
Knowsley > Jun 1974
Sefton North > Jun 1980
Sefton South > Jun1980

Some history of the changes and renaming is here: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Ci ... tion.shtml

As Daggers has also included in his message, some of the hospitals also had their own Register Offices, I know Walton did.

Hi Felix, Ed and I married at the R.O in 1966 which was at Brougham Terrace and a very nice room we had too.

Thanks everyone, that info is invaluable. Now I just have to see if it is possible to find out which one it was, if not then maybe I'm not meant to know. I would imagine it it nowhere near like finding out which church people married in.

Dickiesam - I was born in Sefton General in the early 60's and it always amused me when I found out it used to be one of the workhouses.

Thanks so much again everyone - Cheers :D

Liverpool Council provides information about the Register Office and services. The register office holds details for events in Liverpool and some records for the closed offices that were in Liverpool North, Liverpool South and West Derby.

Why not ask here about the address of the now-closed Liverpool South office?

Isn't this the answer: "Liverpool South: 64 Mount Pleasant" ?
