Private Alfred Mann

Post by Katie »

As part of my ongoing WW1 project I have gone through all the Cemeteries in Liverpool and extracted details of all soldiers whose final resting place is the City of Liverpool. I have the following Soldier:

C
19/11/1918
PRIVATE
ALFRED
MANN
45
SOLDIER
74, ORRELL LANE
WALTON
SPECIAL PUBLIC GRAVE
4
17
NO RECORD

All soldier's interred in the same grave as Alfred are on the CWGC. Alfred Mann who is the only soldier in this grave who is not recorded on CWGC death was registered in Clitheroe. I suspect he died at Whalley Military Hospital. I have been in touch with IFTC and they have tried to trace his Military Record with no success. i now want to trace Alfred and see if we can get him commemorated. I have no listings for this Soldier in my database of wounded Rank and File. He could have been wounded or suffering from Shell Shock before they started to insert the NOK details on the casualty lists. Can you assist.

Muchas Gratias.

The only suitable birth in Lancashire between 1870/1875 was,

Births Mar 1872
MANN Alfred, Ashton 8d 434

I think this poor soul ended up in a lunatic asylum, 1911,
RG14 P24213, P12

Does this rule him out or with all the madness around at the time, very much rule him in?

I found two possible candidates, one the same as Bert....

Birth: MANN, Alfred Robert
Registration district: Birkenhead, Cheshire
Year of registration: 1873; Quarter of registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume no: 8A; Page no: 460

Birth: MANN, Alfred
Registration district: Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire
Year of registration: 1872; Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 8D; Page no: 434

1910+1....
18 North Road, Birkenhead, Cheshire
MANN, Alfred Robert Head 37 1874 Grocer's Buyer - Birkenhead
MANN, Margaret Wife 40 1871 Birkenhead -
MOSELY, Elizabeth Aunt Widow 80 1831 - Faversham, Kent
MANN, Alfred Norman Son 11 1900 School - Birkenhead
MANN, Margaret Gladys Dtr 3 1908 - Birkenhead
MILLER, Susan Amelia Servant u/m 22 1889 Cook Domestic - Birkenhead

1910+1:
Prestwich Lunatic Asylum - Manchester
MANN, Alfred Patient Md 38 1873 Grocer's Assistant - Ashton under Lyne, Lancs.

The Manchester one fits with this death..
MANN, Alfred
Registration district: Clitheroe, Lancashire
Year of registration: 1918; Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 45
Volume no: 8E; Page no: 505

The Birkenhead-born Alfred appears to have died in Crewe in 1956...
MANN, Alfred R
Registration district: Crewe, Cheshire
Year of registration: 1956; Quarter of registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at death: 82
Volume no: 10A; Page no: 222

Very odd!
The householder at 74 Orrell Lane in 1910+1 writes his address on the cover of the Household Return as The Warbrick Hotel. But the enumerator's List simply refers to the dwelling as a private house. And there are no 'residents or guests' listed on the household return apart from Mr and Mrs Lee, nor is there a separate return for the premises.

The return itself is a standard House, Tenement and Apartment Return. Maybe it was a B&B? In 1901 the address is the home of Mr and Mrs James Connell. He is a 'publican manager'.

Ideally we need to see what the 1918 GRO Civil Index death cert says about Alfred and who the informant was.

A possible Liverpool connection with the Whalley Military Hospital, near Clitheroe? Perhaps patients were transferred to Whalley from Liverpool prior to the complete transfer in 1919.

From: http://www.1914-1918.net/hospitals_uk.htm
A) 1st Western General. A TF General Hospital in Fazakerley, Liverpool. 153 officers and 4204 other ranks.
B) Netherfield Road - 7-bed specialist cardiac section opened August 1918. Closing in May 1919, the unit transferred to Toxteth Park Military Hospital, then in August moved again to Queen Mary's Hospital, Whalley.

Thanks Katie,

DS,
Most likely with 5 rooms it would have only been a B&B, perhaps Mr Lee had a sense of humour.
Like the 1901 occupant, Publican Manager, James Lee was also employed by a brewery. May well have took in the odd boarder as a side line.

The Warbreck is still at this address now and is a normal "pub", perhaps it was just that then, some pubs being know in the intervening years as "hotels" but not taking in tenants.
