Visit to Toxteth Cemetary in March

Post by Sue H »

Hi folks, I am going to be visiting Toxteth Cemetary in March, when my hubby goes for Dental Appointment in Rose Lane. If anyone would like pictures of a grave let me know. Would be helpful to have the position of the grave, Toxteth have sent me a map of the area and pin pointed my GG grandfather's grave, so if needed could supply you with copy. Couldnt let the opportunity pass after all work John William Davies has caused !!! Might not find a head stone but never mind :( Let me know as soon as possible so I can plan my route!! Mr H blissfully unaware that the relatives I have in mind reside here.............well at least they wont be out when I call

Hi Blue70 had seen them but had gone direct to Toxteth cemetery who kindly sent large map and details. I did already know grave number. What has shocked me was when I did go in to the Toxteth site and put in John William Davies name it states it's a war grave. From details of his service records I thought he didn't see any action and I have his death certificate and he died of cancer. It is a family plot and he was last in so to speak so if there was an original head stone would they have replaced it with a war memorial headstone. I know his brother Charles did see active service and was injured and later died of his wounds. Charle's wife is also buried with him but her name was not allowed on the head stone.

Hi Sue,

I don't know about war graves I can only guess that both those graves didn't have a headstone before and that they have a rule that only those in the forces can be recorded on the inscription no family members etc. I noticed there is a second soldier commemorated on Charles Davies' headstone called Gerard Bird presumably he was a relation? It might be a good idea to post a question about this subject in the military section.

For reference:-

John William Davies' grave
