Hi Sid,
Where did the birth year for Samuel C Ritchie come from? Scotland's People have only these births 1866 to 1875....
1) 1867 - RITCHIE, SAMUEL - BRIDGETON, GLASGOW CITY/LANARK
2) 1868 - RITCHIE, SAMUEL - AYR/AYR
3) 1869 - RITCHIE, SAMUEL - PITSLIGO/ABERDEEN
4) 1866 - RITCHIE, SAMUEL RIDDLE - PITSLIGO/ABERDEEN
5) 1872 - RITCHIE, SAMUEL - ARDROSSAN NEW /AYR
6) 1872 - RITCHIE, SAMUEL - OLD MONKLAND (MIDDLE DISTRICT)
7) 1874 - RITCHIE, SAMUEL THOMSON - CAMPBELTOWN /ARGYLL

I can't find a Scots marriage for a Moses Ritchie and a Sarah from 1850 to 1875. And haven't found Moses in 1871, 1861 and 1851. Wondering if the surname if spelled correctly? Mind you, there are 18 hits for a marriage of a Sarah to a Ritchie between 1855 and 1875! So it could be the forename because there are 12 matches in the 1871 Census for a Sarah Ritchie aged between 18 and 30. But you need to buy credits to investigate further.

Edit to add: Couldn't resist looking at those 1872 births.... Neither to a Moses or a Sarah!

Here is a transcript of the 1920 Census with Samuel's name transcribed as Janeld C Ritchie:-

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MNB8-9VQ

Here is Samuel and Helen's 1914 marriage transcript with viewable image containing lots of useful details:-

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XVPZ-KMV

This is a strange one perhaps involving name changes or wrong details being submitted. A Sarah Fortenber(r)y appears on some Ancestry trees married to a Moses Rider and they even have a son called Samuel Columbus Rider born in 1871. All USA born. Coincidence or a possible link? Here is this Samuel Rider with his family in 1880:-

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M8P3-7HT

More likely a link. Look at this Samuel Columbus Ritchie died in Florida in 1962:-

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VV3C-N5N

Social Security Death Index includes a date of birth:-

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J2FW-T6L

In 1935, 1940 and 1945 Sam was recorded as being born in New Mexico! Transcripts and viewable images here:-

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MNKH-JGL

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VTCY-6NN

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MNNR-R77

Helen was born Helen Miller Bowie in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1880 (year confirmed from using the search on Scotland's People website), possibly on 7 January as this Social Security Death Index that appears to be her but gives the wrong birth year has that as her birth date:-

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J149-PXQ

Samuel's first marriage in his home state of Georgia was to a cousin according to Ancestry here is a marriage transcript and viewable image:-

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KXVH-XS9

Perhaps Samuel didn't divorce his first wife/cousin and used another surname and different birth details to cover his tracks? I've sent a message with a link to this thread to one of the tree owners on Ancestry who has a lot of information on this family.

Many thanks to Blue,Bert DS,re above.Family story says Samuel C Ritchie was born in Pennsylvania but I am sure it is wrong. The 1930 census is the right family. It shows James A Bowie( father -in-law) age 32 b geogia. He was 40 & b Scotland.
So much confusion. The Rider connection is interesting and would love to hear from the family Blue mentioned on Ancestry.

Thanks to all Sidfow

Just realised I missed a bit of info out.
New York county marriages 1908-1935 show Samuel C Ritchie b Scotland Marrying Helen M Bowie 13th May 1914.This is definitely correct.

If you can't get it free Sid try one of those free trial offers but be sure to cancel it in time. There's loads of trees on there for the Rider family. There's pictures of Moses and Sarah. The tree I thought was really useful and who I sent a message to was by username JRader7549 his tree goes back to the 1700s. I noticed some trees have the Fowler name on them I don't know if this is a coincidence or further proof of a link.
