Hi and welcome to the forum, what a huge amount of information our crew have found for you, well done guys!

It is possible that there are some records held for the school, however they may be in the archives. Please send them an email http://liverpool.gov.uk/libraries/archi ... y-history/ to enquire about the records and if they are in the archives a place would need to be booked giving 24 hours notice.

If your mother was able to come along to the library the Society hosts a Help Desk on Tuesday afternoons, 1.30 - 4.00 pm and would be able to assist in showing her around what records are available, how to thread the microfilms/microfiches etc.

Hi DS

we are not, in fact the owner of the pic could do with looking here. My guess they left Anc a long time ago.

I haven't found a marriage yet for Samuel, so I just wonder if that could be his sister Mary Josephine, our topic subject? It would be great if it was. His mother had been dead for some years before that photo was taken.

First mention of the home I can find in a local newspaper is 1879. You would expect some sort of announcement or official opening for such a home and there doesn't appear to have been any for this home which makes me think that the girls moved there from an earlier female orphans home on another site.

Hi DS,

Whilst trying to find more information on the photo I came across another tree, a bit more detailed which prompted me to dot the I's and cross the T's. unfortunately, no more info on who the lady is in the pic.

A child was registered, Samuel J Rushton,
March Qtr, 1917, Southwalk, 1d 220
Mothers Maiden name, Baily.

Marriage,
Camberwell 1907, 1d 1303
John Charles Tinworth, Bertha Elizabeth Baily.

Marriage,
Camberwell, 1917, June Qtr, 1d 1412,
Wilfred Herbert Chipps, Bertha Elizabeth Tinworth.

Death,
Portsmouth, 1961, June Qtr, 6b 524
Bertha E Chipps.

Relying on family knowledge(tree) it appears Samuel never married Bertha, just had a child together.

Death: RUSHTON, Samuel Joshua
Registration district: Colchester, Essex
Year of registration: 1987; Month of registration: August
Date of Birth: 10 March 1917
Volume no: 9; Page no: 1884; Reg no: 887

Marriage? Same county...
Samuel J Rushton married Olive M Mitchell-Dwelly
Registration district: Romford, Essex
Year of registration: 1938; Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Volume no: 4A; Page no: 1530

Birth: MITCHELL-DWELLY, Olive M - London, Islington - 1915
Death: RUSHTON, Olive May - Essex, Colchester - 1994
Birth: RUSHTON, Walter L - Wellington - 1933

I think this line is only tenuously connected to that of Mary Rushton without knowing 'for certain' who was the father of the child Samuel J Rushton bn in 1917.

Hi all, I've shown all of your posts to my Mum (also called Mary) and she is very intrigued!! She has asked me to post the following:

"Dear all, thank you so much for all your time and effort in helping somebody you've never met before and don't know.

The man in the picture was indeed Mary Josephine's brother, Samuel, and the lady in the picture is in fact Mary Josephine - I have that photograph in our house (but have never uploaded the photo the internet). Our family had always thought that he had fallen from the crow's nest while at sea, and was killed. I was surprised to read that he was registered as having died in Southampton hospital. He had signed 'the pledge' but we believe he still drank (probably to excess!)

I would be very interested to find out more about 'Elsie', mentioned in yesterday's posts.

Firstly, is there any way to find out more about the Elsie, born in 1916, who would have been Mary Josephine's first daughter?

Secondly, I am aware of an Elsie in the family. Mary Josephine married John 'Bert' Stephens. 'Bert' had a brother, Philip, and a sister who was 'deaf and dumb' called Elsie ... I wonder if there could be a link with the other Elsie (1st daughter of Mary Josephine and Bert).

If the dates you have found are correct, my Nan, Mary Josephine, would have been 6 months pregnant with Elsie when she got married! I knew her to be a lady of very high morals, and I find this very hard to believe!!

Thank you very much for all of your efforts on my behalf, Mary."

Many thanks,
Emma

Hello Emma,
Re:

The only way to confirm whether or not Elsie was Mary Josephine's daughter would be to purchase the birth certificate online from the General Registry Office. It would cost £9.25. The GRO is here: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certi ... efault.asp

You would need to use the reference posted here:
Births Sep 1916: Stephens, Elsie C [Rushton] - District: W.Derby; Volume: 8b; Page: 1157
However if, when ordering, you specify the parents' names Mary J Rushton and John B Stephens and enter only the year 1916 without any other info such as Volume and Page #, if that entry does not have the right parents' names the GRO will refund the fee in full and you would then know Elsie was not Mary's daughter.

To clarify or perhaps muddy the waters, there is a strong possibility that Elsie was not Mary's daughter as there were 3 Stephens/Rushton marriages in Liverpool between 1911 and 1916...
STEPHENS, John A married Rushton, Ellen - Lancashire, West Derby 1911
STEPHENS, Thomas married Rushton, Ada A - Lancashire, West Derby 1913
and
STEPHENS, John B married Rushton, Mary J - Lancashire, West Derby 1916

Elsie C Stephens was born in "West Derby Eastern" according to Lancs BMD so could be the child of Thomas Stephens and Ada Alice Rushton who were married at St Anne's, Stanley on 8 June 1913. Margaret A Stephens was born in "Toxteth Park East" in 1918 according to Lancs BMD so if this birth is the right family they were living in the Toxteth area. My Great Grandparents were married in Holy Trinity, Wavertree. They were from Toxteth I think my great grandmother was working as a servant in the Wavertree area at the time. Here is the 1916 marriage record (right click on it to save it):-
