My Grandads Pre W.W.1 army service

My Grandfather Born 1 St. October 1875 Enlisted in the Kings L'pool reg. 9th Btn.(Territorial ) on 9-10-1915 1/9/K L R went to France 13-3-15 he went in the Reinforcement Draft 1916 so did not qualify for the 1915 star (His medal records only show British war and Victory medals ) he was wounded and discharged from the Army 26-9-16 where are the war diaries held ? he received the Silver War Badge No. 47273
he lived the rest of his Life with my Mum & Dad and died 28 Oct. 1927 at 50 Calder St .His Army records must be in the Burnt Records but did he receive a Pension ? I have searched for about 14 Years His Shrapnel damaged Tin Hat was under our stairs during the 2nd World war
Can a Fresh pair of Eyes help ?

Some battalion war diaries of the KLR are at the Museum of Liverpool Life, near the Pier Head. They seldom mention 'other ranks' but you might be lucky and you might find a general interest in what was going on, even without a specific mention.

Discharged from the Army 26th Sept. 1916

not a very good year for Grandad !!

my question where is the Wailly sector we were in Arras last year (wish I new then )
still we are going back on W.W.I tour in September so will look then another mystery I have a Photo of him in uniform and Ian. Swinnerton says the Badge is of the SLI ? anyone got an Idea ?

Wailly is in the Township of Arras, so you cannot have been far away! Try Googling 'Wailly near Arras' and you will find plenty.
The 9th Battalion KLR wore the usual Brunswick horse badge. Can you post a copy of your photo here?

George Highton earned the Victory and British War Medals and a Silver War Badge - the Medal Index Card is on Ancestry. The reference for the SWB is TH/447. The details will be at the National Archives, but may be available through a higher level of Ancestry than I have. There may not be very much there!

From George - Gerard Highton b. 3.4.1899, Private 48696 enlisted in the South
Wales Borderers almost certain he was wounded whilst serving with SWB and
hospitalised in England date unknown. On his recovery he was transferred to
the Liverpool Regiment. His number 99963. This is in the so called
non-territorial block. This medal card infers that he served abroad.
Photos shows Gerard standing with his parents, George and Esther.

Also - The centre badge is the badge worn on the slouch or forage cap 1898-1921. The outside two are the helmet badges worn on the full dress blue cloth helmet so it would appear that George Highton was a pre-war regular soldier recalled either for the Boar War or the Great War.

The Photo of George b. 1-10-1875 in Uniform must have been before he enlisted in the Kings 9-10-1915 as he was wearing the cap of the Somerset Light Infantry with Stripes in the Photo is Gerard in Sailor suit b.3-4-1899 he would have been 16 in 1915 and the baby on her mums knee is Esther b. 1902 so again not 13

I'm still looking for Grandad's pre first war army service we think he was in the Somerset Light Infantry from his cap badge
His Name George Highton born 1st October 1875 In Liverpool he must have come out of the army sometime before the war started as he volunteered in the 9th Territorial Battalion of the Kings No. 4317 on 9/10/1915 and was drafted to France with the 1/9 KLR (13/3/15) probably 1916 as he did not qualify for the 1915 Star . Wounded (Where) and Hospitalised (Where) subsequently discharged 26/9/16 and Died 28 Oct 1927 Hope someone can help. As usual I started after everyone who could tell me has Passed away

Do you already have his Service Papers, is that where you got his information from? Isn't there a question on the front page asking if he had served previously? is that missing.

Have you also downloaded the silver war badge card, can be accessed online via the National Archives, Documents Online. On the card it should mention the date of discharge, the cause and the number of the badge - List TH447.
