Help needed for obtaining a will

Post by erika »

Hi All

I am trying to get a copy of a will, something I have done before, but now can't remember the process
I have the information from the National Probate Calendar on Ancestry, but not sure if the forms I downloaded a few ago, from HMCS ( Application for a probate search ) are still relevant.
Also the cost now, I paid £5 for the last wills I sent for. Can't seem to find what I want on the HMCS website.
Maybe just having a senior moment, but would be grateful for some advice please. :D

The address for copy wills/probate is now:
Postal Searches and Copies Department
Leeds District Probate Registry
York House
York Place
Leeds
LS1 2BA

The fee has risen to £6. You can download an application form from HM Courts service, but I have done it in the past by letter, with cheque, and you can probably still do that as you have the details they need.

Before you order, if it is for Liverpool, check whether there is a certified copy held at the Lancashire Record Office, I've been told they have a book with them. Mind you it still costs £5 to use your camera so no gain in price there.

Thanks for the tip Mary, but it isn't Liverpool, hubby's London family for a change, although they are linked to the elusive Arthur Gissing, if you remember that saga!!

Just found a lot of the family including Arthur's wife buried in a cemetery in Stoke Newington. I am waiting to hear if there is a headstone, so fingers crossed.
The will I want is for someone buried in this family grave, she left quite a substantial amount for those times and was a spinster, trouble is I can't find exactly who she is, relationship wise (an aunt I think) common name and hard to track in the census, but hey that's part of the fun
