Hi Folks while I am awaiting birth certificates for my Predergast/Davies saga thought I would try and track grandad
Using my freebies from FMP I tried to find his Merchant navy documents. The following is all that I could find. Apparently 1913-1921 cards were burnt in 1969 for no apparant reason
HUGHES
First names:Richd
Age:33
Day of birth:
Month of birth:
Year of birth:
Place of birth:Bootle
County/country of birth:Lancashire
Card type:CR2
Discharge number:1130924
Identity certificate no.:
Series:BT348
Date range:1921-1941
Piece number:1
It states he was 33, so I presume he filled in this in 1936 ( 1903-1975) That assuming it is him
Is there anything on this information that I can use to track him elsewhere ?? I know he was with Cunard but that was much later. He probably retired from sea in the early 60's.
I don't think this RH is your man. Regarding the record cards from the WW1 period, I was under the impression that such records were ceased for security reasons and the system was not recommenced until 1921.

To rule out another possible....
There is a card for an R Hughes, bn Crosby abt 1903, which is marked 'Deceased', who signed on the SS Van Dyke at Southampton 17th March 1937. The card has the ID #s of 5 other vessels he had been a crew member of, the last entry being 20th June 1940 for the SS Duchess of York. He may well have died when this ship was bombed off the coast of Portugal in 1943.
Grandad didnt passed away 1975. I remember nan talking about injuries he had being from the war, but still cant find anything that puts him in the "services".
I did put a picture of him in uniform on here but still unable to identify the uniform although there is a set of medal ribbons on him.
After Christmas coming over to liverpool to do some hands on research.
Meanwhile I await the birth certificate of John Francis Davies
