Occupation

Post by monica4amos »

Hi All, Whilst checking on an ancestors occupation in the 1851 census I found out that he was a cooper, journeyman, peawich and a pensioner. I am at a loss as to what a Peawick is? Is it a misspelling? If so is can anyone out there help me please.

Could you perhaps give us the reference for the census entry so that we can see it for ourselves?

Hi, since my reply I have done the research and found out what Greenwich pensioner was, but are you able to tell me where I need to go to research his naval records. As I live in Australia it would be easier to do it online if at all possible. John Edwards was my Great Great Grandfather.
With Many a Thanks

Hi Monica,

The National Archives would be your first port of call,

Depending on the years you are interested in, might be difficult.

Hi N.M without census, that was a great shot in the dark!!
:D
A Greenwich pensioner was the Naval equivalent of a Chelsea pensioner.
Here's their website

Hi all, I posted a thank you the other day but now I can't find it so if I am repeating myself please forgive me.
I have been busy trying to research my great Great Grandfather John Edwards and his occupation as a Greenwich Pensioner. I think I have located him on the Naval General Service Medal list but like most things I am not. 100% sure.
But many thanks for all your assistance I wouldn't have got thus far if it wasn't for your assistance.
May I ask R who first asked if it was John Edwards how did you know it was him when I hadn't"t given his name or census information. I just curious .
Once again a big Thank You to you all
Regards

I used the excellent census search facility in the www.thegenealogist.co.uk to search the 1851 census for a combination of the keywords journeyman and pensioner (cooper didn't work because they had transcribed it as "coopers"). It took just a few seconds to find the only likely candidate.
