John Denman in Somerset C 1770

Post by lynne99 »

My cousin in Australia has ased if I can confirm the marriage of John DENMAN and Ann in about 1770 , somewhere in Somerset. She would like to see the register. I let my subscription to A ** lapse on the 13th Oct.
This is the info she has given me.

"What I am looking for is – the marriage of John Denman and Ann (Mead) in about 1770. I think she was Mead. The birth info for the children just says John and Ann/Hanner. I would really love to get my hands on the marriage certificate but it probably gives no more info than what is on Freereg. They had 2 children in ILTON Somerset, one of which is my 4x great-grandfather Philip b. 1774. The rest seem to be born in North Cadbury – 8 of them. Their names – which are unusual – match another family in Puckington and I would like them to be related. This is my problem. We have names like Reubeafter giving Reuben, Heber, Josiah etc.

If Ann is a Mead, then they could come from Puckington. A John Denman from there md. 1st a Priscilla Mead who died giving birth. he then md. 2nd an Ann who could be a sister (maybe). Their children include Priscilla (twice). Do you think I could be on the right track?"

I do hope you can help.
She came over to stay last March and we spent some time in Somerset looking for churches.
I would look for the children and confirm what the mother's first name was, but I can't :(
Then I would work back from there. Please help if you can. Joan would be very pleased.

At the date of that marriage there wouldn't be the usual information such as you would get post 1837 (after civil registration), the most it might give is perhaps an occupation or abode, most likely either "of this parish" or the name of a nearby village.

can anyone please look up baptism of one or two of the children, so we can see if the mother is Anne. Thanks very much, both of you, for your help. :D :D

Somerset registers are not on Ancestry.

Family search records John Denman marrying Anne Mead on 4 August 1771 at Puckington. To find out if anything more is written on the entry you need to ask for a copy from wherever Puckington parish registers are lodged. I imagine it would be Somerset Record Office. Bear in mind that it would be illegal to marry your deceased wife's sister so Anne and Priscilla could be cousins because the vicar would know they were sisters.

Thanks. I should have remembered that. I still need to find and check the mother was Anne. I have had no luck on IGI. A member of the Bootle forum did find a list of marriages at Puckington on Roots Gen and gave me the link, but when I tried to find it for myself, I couldn't.

Thanks again
Lynne

The marriage I quoted was on www.familysearch.org the website of the LDS church which includes the old IGI.

Your best bet is to contact Somerset records office and get a copy from them. If the marriage was by licence you will probably be able to get a copy of that. The earlier marriage to Priscilla Mead was at South Petherton on 26 February 1759.

All the above on www.familysearch.org

The short answer is yes. try
somerset online parish clerks genealogy

You'll have to learn to play about with it but it has lot more info, like witness names
and exact dates.
Pucklington itself doesn't have it's own page but there is a link to a transcriber who has gone to lot trouble,
I won't say any more I'll just let you enjoy having a good rummage
kind regards
