Newspaper report on 1907 inquest - Coveney

Post by jaycee »

Hello All,

Have recently discovered that a death in the family was due to corrosive poison of some kind. An inquest was held on the 19th and 24th September and 17th. October, 1907.

Is there anyone out there who might have access to newspaper records which might contain a report on the inquest, please?

Thanks, Jaycee

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately the newspapers available online that we can access with our library cards stop before that date. You could try and see if FindMyPast has any entries, their database holdings do go up to 1949 and you could purchase credits to Pay per View.

If the death that you have found was in the Liverpool area the most likely write up would be in one of the following
Liverpool Daily Courier 1808 to 1929
Liverpool Echo started 1879 to date
Liverpool Mercury started 1811 to 1904 when it merged with the Daily Post

The microfilms for these newspapers are held at the Liverpool Record Office which will reopen on 17th May, alternatively you will probably find some of them available at Huyton.

We could give it a shot if you told us the name of the deceased, age at death and the actual date and place of death.

Sorry, it seems that a personal visit to the Record Office will be your next task on the list.

Jane Matilda Coveney is my Great Grandmother and I too wonder about her cause of death by corrosive poisoning. I have heard that it was rumoured that she may have been murdered....?????

I saw the reply stating that since there was no available information regarding the inquest a visit to the local record office was recommended, unfortunately I live in Canada so that is not possible. Does anyone have any other suggestions where I could inquire online or by snail mail?I do have a copy of her death certificate that states cause of death: corrosive poisoning and dates of the inquest.

Apologies to all who have posted replies. I have been waylaid from this topic for quite some time and must admit I should have checked sooner.

Many thanks to you all.

Perhaps somebody with a Findmypast subscription could advise if the Liverpool newspapers on the site cover those individual dates, that way you would be able to use just a few credits to search the pages as perhaps the search engine didn't pick up the Surname accurately the first time.
