Re: Missing Ellen Mcdonough and family after 1891
Hi Bert he needs to know if Michael Michael's father was deceased or not and what address he was living at.

Thanks Bert.
I'm assuming this Church is a CoE church so hopefully on the record will include the address, occupations & if father is deceased or not. On his siblings marriage records most of this info isn't included because they took place in RC churches.

Quick query. What happened to homeless people during census times? Were they recorded?
Re: Missing Ellen Mcdonough and family after 1891
Only if they were 'officially' known to exist and where they slept [spent the night] etc. Most 'homeless' were inmates of the workhouses so would be counted in the census. I believe no real effort was put into locating homeless such as nomadic 'tramps' and Romany families, and those who would otherwise be in a workhouse etc, until the 1911.dlh1 wrote:Quick query. A note on Findmypast for the 1911 Census reads...
The 1911 census for England and Wales was taken on the night of Sunday 2 April, 1911. The count included all individual households, plus institutions such as prisons, workhouses, naval vessels and merchant vessels, and it also attempted to make an approximate count of the homeless.

Re: Missing Ellen Mcdonough and family after 1891
Just a point to remember that although the father's occupation was usually given on the marriage certificate his address wasn't, it may have been different from what was given by the groom, who might even have been using a convenience address for the wedding. Also as has been found often in the past, even if a father is not noted as "deceased" doesn't necessarily mean he was still living, just that the question may not have been asked and nobody thought to mention it.
Hope you are lucky with what you find on yours.

Re: Missing Ellen Mcdonough and family after 1891
Hi
Found the marriage of Christina Stephens 1884 who had a sister named Ellen born 1858, and were living in Nursery Street Liverpool with their mum Jane in 1861, had to see her fathers name and alas it was Thomas Stephens, so we can rule out this family now.
Little Daniel Ellen's son b 1888 has me baffled he would only be aged 12 in 1901 could a lad go to see that young, as most of his uncles, cousins etc were seamen.
There is no trace of him on the census, even tried the Irish 1901 too.

Re: Missing Ellen Mcdonough and family after 1891
It is baffling about Daniel b1888. I can't find him in 1901 or 1911. Fair enough, in 1911 he may have been at sea.
I've searched for all Daniel McDonough's around the country for 1901 and didn't specify a DOB and not many Daniels turned up, none which would match my Daniel.
The only other thing i can think of is he may have been staying with someone else and they accidentally put his surname down incorrectly, perhaps put the surname of the head of the house instead of McDonough.

Re: Missing Ellen Mcdonough and family after 1891
The school leaving age at this time was 12 so yes he could be at sea.

Re: Missing Ellen Mcdonough and family after 1891
I still don't 100% know if he was a seaman, i'm assuming because many other members of his family were.
Now i need to find out what happened to Ellen, his mum or Michael, his dad.
Also, if anyone is at the record office in Liverpool and able to locate the marriage cert of his brother as mentioned earlier that would be great.
Many thanks,

You need to contact the Record Office and find out if that particular date is on film or still in the Register. If the latter it will need to be viewed in the Archive Room and 24 hours notice given to view it.

Re: Missing Ellen Mcdonough and family after 1891
I think I may have cracked the case of Daniel McDonough.
Can't find him in 1901 and 1911 census as he would be away at sea. I found a merchant seaman called Daniel Mcdonough born in 1886, 2 years before my Daniel. Perhaps he lied about his age when he was younger to get into the merchant navy, pretending he was 14 and not 12. Does anyone know if it was common for people to lie about their age to get employed? They were an extremely poor family, so i'm thinking this could be the case, as no Daniel McDonough was born in 1886, the nearest one is my Daniel, born 1888.

Re: Missing Ellen Mcdonough and family after 1891
Quite common especially to join the services MN, RN, or the Army. Wasn't just adding a few years either. I have one 33 year old who, in 1878, said he was 26 when he enlisted for 12 years in the Royal Artillery at the Fort in New Brighton. His missus of 16 years had just shacked up with another man so he went off to India!dlh1 wrote:I think I may have cracked the case of Daniel McDonough.
