I have just googled it and found out my own answer. Yes.

I have found a soldier John Brown correct date of death but with a different regiment number. Do these numbers ever change?

It depends on whether he was co-opted from another battalion, so yes they did sometimes have another number, usually you might find two numbers on a medal card if they existed.

More than one J Brown died on that date, it appears your John Brown only had the number 96752 on Medal Roll, Soldiers Effects, SDGW,

What's the number?

I did a search with just Brown no first name or initial and the date of 08 Oct 1918 no regiment number and it only came up with these 3.

BROWN EDWIN GEORGE 226378 08 October 1918
BROWN JOHN 14019 08 October 1918
BROWN WILLIAM THOMAS 14964 08 October 1918

Thank you Bertie, you just saved me a tenner in my excitement to order the WRONG will. I can't believe there is no extra check like on BMD certificates, it should at least show you the Regiment or something to narrow things down, then again I suppose the government likes to get their greedy mitts  from as many people as possible.

Yes I think that's probably it I need to become more familiar with the ins and outs of all these sites!!

I have now ordered the will for the other one but the site has charged me for two duplicate wills. £20 they now have instead of £10, I've written to their customer service as well as my bank to inform them..........

Always check your "Basket" before you hit the pay button, it's so easy for additional items to go through.

I am sure I posted a reply here yesterday about solders' numbers but cannot see it now.

Territorials all had their numbers changed in 1917. The whole army was renumbered after WW1, when they ceased to be regimental numbers and became a permanent army number.
