Newspaper search 1938

Post by CathyS »

Is anyone able to search local Liverpool newspapers for me to see if there is a report of the suicide/coroner's inquest of an Eliza Ann Sutton who lived at 15 Hawthorne Rd Litherland and who died on 3 March 1938 by poisoning from inhalation of coal gas? There was a coroner's inquest held the next day on 4 March.
I'm hoping that there was a newspaper report about her death in the local papers which would provide more information. Thanks

The original inquest records may exist. Some information here:-

This address is in the Sefton Council area I don't know if the inquest record would be at Liverpool or not. It's called Merseyside Record Office so it may be at Liverpool.

Thanks, most Coroners' records haven't survived for my neck of the woods so I wasn't expecting any to be available. I've just checked the Liverpool Archives catalogue and it seems they do hold inquest papers for 1938.

Hi and welcome to the forum. You should also be able to do a newspaper search on the Findmypast site, although it is a subscription site you can purchase a few credits rather than take out a full year.

Thanks, I've already checked FindmyPast but there is no relevant entry. There are 3 Liverpool papers included on there but none of them go beyond 1918 so far (Liverpool Echo). I think more editions are being added so will be worth checking at a later date.

I would suggest that this would be recorded in the Bootle Times. This is on film at Crosby Library. As you have the date of death I would email/phone them - can't remember the address/tel no but you want Sefton Local History at Crosby Library and they may look it up for you.

Many thanks for the information. I've now contacted Crosby Library and they are going to check the Bootle Times for me so fingers crossed there will be a relevant report.
