1914 Directory - Garston address?

Post by daggers »

In August 1914 one of the Army's recruiting offices was listed as '51 St Mary's Road, Garston'. I think that in those days the numbering ran the opposite way to the present and I would be interested to know what premises were used. It would help if the directory shows the nearest side-roads, too.
Thnaks in advance.

The 1911 summary book has 51/53, St Mary's Road listed as a Private House,

33, Mariners Arms.
49, Nelson Arms.
61, Grapes Inn.
69, Stanley Arms,

are any of those standing today and perhaps take a bearing from them.

I haven't got the 1914 but the 1911 has this address by Wellington Street. Number 49 is Mrs Jane Bates, beerseller then we have Wellington Street then 53 is Holding & Bell painters & plumbers. Number 55 is Garston Town Sub-Post, MO & T Office "Telegraph office open on Sundays from 9 to 10am". No number 51 listed.

It must be where the current number 51 stands it's now KP Motor Factors. Back in 1889 this building was a police station.

Hi Daggers

1914 Directory has the following listed
No 51 St Mary's Road

49 Mrs Jane Bates Beerseller
then it's Wellington Street

53 St Mary's Road Holiday & Bell Painters and Plumbers

In Wellington Street
45 Joseph Bell Grocer
47 Mrs Ann Byrne

I looked through all the listings for the military and where there offices were, but nothing listed for St Mary's Road
The Liverpool Recruiting Area was at
19 & 20 Old Haymarket.

Sorry nothing concrete there to go on!

The information for directories was usually collected the year before so they may have decided when war broke out in 1914 to use the old police station building at 51 St Mary's Road on a temporary basis.

Thanks all round for information and ideas. I was clearly wrong about the numbering and when it changed. No. 51 has had a chequered career through the years and I have often wondered about the Prince of Wales feathers insignia on the upper facade. Would that have a county police connection?
Probably the recruiting authorities seized on a convenient building for their immediate use, as there was no large drill hall available in the township.

"The area around Lark lane was administered by the Township of Toxteth Park, until absorbed into Liverpool in 1895. So the old Police Station on Lark lane, built in 1885 was built by the Lancashire Police force and not the Liverpool Police Force. It is indeed similar in design to the police station Heald Street Garston which was built in 1890 replacing an earlier one in St Mary's Rd built in 1874 and that replacing an even earlier one of 1862 also in St Mary's Rd."
