Pte John Sattella Number 17929 Loyal North Lancs Regiment

I have an ancestor Pte John Sattella Number 17929 in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, Manchester Regiment, who was awarded the Silver War Badge No. 377.424. Cause of Discharge S.Para 392 XVI K.R. entitled to the award of the badge under Para 2(b)(i) or 2 (d) on 23rd March 1918.

Reading his documents he also appears to have served in the Militia - 3rd Cheshire Regiment,

Apart from the mention of France, his Service Records note that he served in South Africa between 8.1.03 and 27.11.03.

Can anybody tell me anything more about what he was doing - you know I am a military duffuss, I have to ask, particularly as this is outside the normal WWI events. Thanks

In case you were wondering, he does appear to be in Liverpool and working as a house painter with his brother, living in what appears to be a lodging house in Roscommon Street in 1911.

I have seen 11 documents in the series relating to this man, including his attestation into the Cheshire Militia on the 2nd Sep 1898. He was a painter and living in Beckwith Street, Birkenhead at the time.

While there he was in the Manchesters and a Private, so I reckon he was an ordinary footslogger infantryman. His papers indicate he was with the 4th Battalion. See http://www.tameside.gov.uk/museumsgalle ... istory/4th

Thank you, I do now, only had a part of them previously, not including the attestation to the Cheshire Militia. We never knew he had lived in Birkenhead, probably the reason why he was in a Cheshire Regiment, but the occupation of painter does confirm it is the right man - albeit there is one of the documents which - presumably mistakenly - is headed up "James" Sattella.

Just in passing I feel I should mention the difference in quality between one subscription site and another of the military documents they hold, they are obviously the same paperwork, so perhaps it is the scanners used, thanks for bringing the other documents to my attention!
