Are you sure they weren't "Living next door to Alice"

Re:
No wish to doubt a family story but if Alice was born in 1908 she would have been very young to have a sweetheart killed in WW1, barely 10 in 1918. Is it possible she wasn't a Shepherd and was fostered/taken in as a very young child after 1911 by William and Mary? Her erstwhile 'brothers' may never have known she was not a 'blood' sister.I know her sweetheart went to war and never returned which is why she stayed single.

Re: Shepherd/Carter Family Tree
Another thought... When did Alice die? There are only 3 deaths in Liverpool from 1967, when you say you remember her, to 2000.
SHEPHERD, Alice Marion - Liverpool 1977 [bn 05/04/1896]
SHEPHERD, Ada Alice - Liverpool 1974 [bn 23/08/1912]
SHEPHERD, Elizabeth Alice - Liverpool 1997 [bn 21/07/1909]
The lack of a matching birth would indicate that the deceased had been married.

Re: Shepherd/Carter Family Tree
Hi Allan,
Still thinking sideways...
Do either of these female Shepherd nee Carter births fit your family?
Births Jun 1912: Shepherd, Catherine [Carter] W.Derby 8b 535
Births Mar 1919: Shepherd, Elizabeth A [Carter] W.Derby 8b 450
For Alice to have a sweetheart who went to war in 1939, the Elizabeth A bn 1919 may have been Alice, and she would have been sweetheart age at 20-ish.

Hi dickiesam
You just beat me to the tape. Mystery solved.
Elizabeth Alice Shepherd March qtr 1919 West Derby 8b 450 was Auntie Alice. Catherine was her sister. And yes Alice did pass away in 1997.
Many thanks.

Re: Shepherd/Carter Family Tree
Hello
I noticed that the biography for Ralph Alfred Shepherd has his age at death as 49 when in fact he was 40, his birth is shown as Dec qtr 1874 West Derby 8b 390 which would tie in with the 1891 census at 3 Brookhill Road Bootle showing his age as 16.
To further research his other siblings (all sisters other than my grandfather William aged 6) could you please let me know the family members living at Holmfield House Litherland when the 1901 census took place. I note that all children bar Mary Elizabeth had left home when the 1911 census was done.
Can anyone read the name Shepherd ??eury Ellen aged 3 born 1888 on the 1891 census please?
Best Regards
Allan

Re: Shepherd/Carter Family Tree
Although I would have suspected it to be Mary Ellen, the writing doesn't look like it, in fact the first letter appears to be an N - have you considered the birth ofallanpshepherd123 wrote: Can anyone read the name Shepherd ??eury Ellen aged 3 born 1888 on the 1891 census please?
Nellie Shepherd in Q4 1887 West Derby 8b 507
If you wanted to apply for the birth certificate you could specify that the father had to be Ralph or else you wouldn't want the certificate, that could guarantee it.
Hmmmm I suspect the enumerator made a complete hash of writing the name above and it could be Henry Ellen - ie Henrietta

Re: Shepherd/Carter Family Tree
Just searched all Shepherd births registered in West Derby 1887 to 1889. The only one that comes close is the one MaryA suggested..... And the enumerator made a complete shambles of transferring the name from the Household return.
Births Mar 1888: SHEPHERD, Henrietta W Derby 8b 519
Her baptism may be online?

Re: Shepherd/Carter Family Tree
Nope, I had checked but think it's probably because it would have been in the Bootle/Litherland area, not so much online as for Liverpool.dickiesam wrote: Her baptism may be online?

Re: Shepherd/Carter Family Tree
Hello Eileen
Read an article on "Bootle Times" forum about John O'Connell Bootle survivor, Lusitania by BOBHAMO. Lily8 on same site pointed me to the National Archives regarding the MIC (medal index card) for Ralph Alfred Shepherd.
I now have the MIC certificate indicating Mercantile Marine Medal, British Medal and Clasps being received 20/04/1922 by widow M Shepherd living at 13 Kilburn Street Litherland after her application dated 22/06/1921.
Many thanks for all who have contributed so far from both sites.
Best Regards
Allan
I will endeavour to see what become of Ralph's wife Hannah Margaret (nee Boylan) and his children in later years.

Re: Shepherd/Carter Family Tree
After having help to solve my Auntie Elizabeth Alice Shepherd born 1919 I have come across an anomaly with another Alice Shepherd.
On the 1891 census at 3 Brookhill Road Bootle Alice Shepherd is shown as age 9 (along with siblings Mary 11, William 6 and Henrietta 3) presumably born 1882. Cannot find a GRO reference for Alice.
On the 1901 census at Holmfield House Litherland there is no "Alice" but there is an Ann J Shepherd (found GRO June qtr 1882 West Derby 8b 501) age 19. Is there any reason that I have missed to suggest that Alice and Ann J are the same person?
Also Henrietta age 3 on the 1891 census is not on the 1901 census and I cannot find a registered death, any thoughts?
Best Regards
