Ashton In Makerfield newspapers 1840-1890

Post by Alasala »

Hi,

Would anyone know where I can find out which newspapers would carry stories covering the small region Ashton, Newton, Golbourne and Lowton?

I'm researching the SIMM family from Ashton In Makerfield and have hit a few walls that local newspapers may help me overcome.

Thanks
Al

Hi there, I don't know whereabouts you live but Wigan Observer and Wigan Examiner where the newspapers to cover Ashton-in-Makerfield. They will be available at the Museum of Wigan Life and Leigh Local History Section of Leigh Library. Check with them first that the dates you want are actually covered by the newspapers.

my great great grandfather's brother James William (aka William) Lane married Mary Ellen Simm; and his sister Emily Lane married Mary Ellen's brother Thomas Simm.

The parents of the Simm children appear to be Charles and Ann (nee Heaton), Charles birth place listed as Ashton in Makerfield.

Charles and Ann appear to be buried in Newton le Willows Cemetery along with their daughter Mary Ellen and her husband James William Lane.

Emily is buried with her parents in Newton le Willows Cemetery but her husband Thomas Simm appears to be buried in another plot all together at the same cemetery.

Best wishes!
