KIRKDALE COUNTY GAOL - Staff records mid 1800's

Post by Gangus »

Does anyone know if or where any Kirkdale County Gaol records or reports might exist relative to staff? I am particularly interested in the period 1847 - 1855

My great great grandfather John ANGUS was appointed as the Head Warder at Kirkdale Gaol from May 1844 (Previously Police Inspector Liverpool Constabulary)
Parliamentary Papers, GB Parliament,
House of Commons, by HMSO, 1845 Page 61
Prisons of Great Britain - Returns of Officers
In 1844 he is recorded at: Bootle Lane KIRKDALE and 1848 Liverpool Directory only as KIRKDALE. There are a few articles in the Liverpool Mercury re both Police & Gaol events.

John disappeared or was possibly murdered sometime from the very late 1840's.
I haven't yet found him in the 1851 census but his wife Eliza & 4 children (Fanny, Lewis, John & Robert Alexander) are now at Kensington Rd WEST DERBY.

Any guidance and suggestions appreciated (especially if they are accessible from Australia eg links, email contacts etc)

Regards
Glenn ANGUS

As for staff records I think there are none.

Hello Glenn,
Do you have a place and YoB for John Angus and have you found any of the family after 1851?
Because Eliza says she is a wife and married in 1851 I would tend to believe that John is alive at that time.

I think this is the family in 1841?
RG number: HO107 Piece: 1421 Book/Folio: 1/28 Page: 8
Address: Caradog Lane, Aberavon, Avon, Glamorganshire
ANGUS, John M 40 1801 Police constable [not bn in county?]
ANGUS, Eliza F 30 1811
ANGUS, Fanny F 1 1840

The actual ages of John and Eliza could be between 40 and 44 and 30 and 34 respectively because of the age rounding-down rule in the 1841 census for everyone over the age of 15. As such, people aged 15-19 were recorded as 15; 20-24 were recorded as 20; 25-29 were recorded as 25; 30-34 were recorded as 30, and so on. Not all enumerators 'complied' with the rule unfortunately. So ages could be about right or out by up to 4 years.

And is this his marriage?
John Angus married Eliza Hartley
[at St Marks, Liverpool] - [from http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/marrind.cgi ]
Registration district: Liverpool, Lancashire
Year of registration: 1837; Sep qtr
Volume no: 20; Page no: 130

You mentioned murder as a possible cause of death. Is this family lore or is there some truth there?

Trying to confirm YoBs for the 4 children in the 1851 so I can look for them in a later census I am surprised to find that although all are said to be born Liverpool in that census, I haven't found a registration for any of them in England or Wales between 1837 and 1850. Rather surprising given that the father was an officer of the law.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Fanny, Lewis and Robert were all baptised in St Peters, Liverpool, if you don't have copies of the registers, let me know.

1840, he was a Policeman, 1842 he was Turnkey on the Borough Gaol and 1848 he was noted to be a Turnkey.
