Hi
I was really interested to see your post.
Lily Goodwill was my great grandmother. I believe her mother and William Goodwill Robson were cousins. It seems that her mother was pregnant and unmarried and went to her cousins to have Lily. William then raised Lily and Ann returned to Scarborough.
I have quite a lot of information about the Goodwill family and obviously can fill you in about Lily's life after she grew up. I would love to be able to learn from the information you have and it would be fantastic to see the photo.
I have a picture of Lily with her husband and two of her children taken in Mancheater around 1908 if thats of interest.
I very much look forward to hearing from you.
Regards

Hello,

So glad that you saw my e-mail. I spotted your initial post from a random Internet search of my great grandfather's name which brought me to this Family History Society.

I always assumed that Lily was born in 1890 because the 1891 Census lists her as 8 months old. It also has my grandmother May Robson as 11 months old. Both were living with William Goodwill and Annie Robson plus (at that point) 7 siblings at 40 Cowper Street, Manchester. I wonder if the information should have been that Lily was adopted at 8 months old rather than being of that age. Anyway, the family group photo that I now have clearly shows Lily to be older than little May. I have an individual photo of William Goodwill Robson which you might also like to see. I wonder if it is O.K. for you to give me your e-mail address so that I can send the scans as an attachment. I would also be delighted to have any more information.

The Robson children ended up all over the place with several emigrating to Australia and others including May to America. She went to Detroit when her husband Herbert Welch got a job making Model T Fords. They left England in 1923 taking their young daughter (my mother) with them but returned to Manchester in 1932 after May's death.

All good wishes,

Sylvia

I am currently doing some family research for my mother and I ran across this forum and had to respond.
My GG Grandmother was Annie Robson Shore. She came to the US sometime in 1910 (or around there). They first lived in Indiana but moved to Detroit in 1930. According to that census they lived with Herbert and May Welch.
I saw your posts about having pictures of the Robson family and was very interested in getting any other information you might have. I do know that William Goodwill Robson had a coal yard somewhere on Cowper Street and that it was near a tavern. There are some questions though as to whether the tavern was owned by a Robson or a Shore.
Also, according to my mother, she was told that the reason the Robson children moved to either the US or Australia had to do with William Goodwill Robson's new wife. Apparently some of the kids did not get along with her. You wouldn't happen to know what her name was do you?
I thank you for any information you can provide. My mother lived with her Grandmother Annie as a child and I would love to provide her more information about that side of the family.
Thanks.
Kris

Hello Kris,

There is so much that I can pass on to you. My grandparents were Herbert and May Welch. Your great great grandmother Annie Shore and her family moved from their home in Indiana to live with the Welch family in Detroit when May (Annie's sister) became ill with cancer. My mother Lilias Welch (now 95) remembers Annie with great fondness and to this day speaks admiringly of the self-sacrifice she made. Annie helped care for May plus her children Lilias, Bill and Herbert. May died in 1932 and the Welch family went back to Manchester but the Shores remained in America. My mother never saw her aunt Annie again and when her father Herbert re-married in England, his wife tore up a letter that Lilias had written to the Shores, saying that they were past history now and she wasn't to have contact with them. This was just the beginning of some terrible times facing Lilias, Bill and Herbert. It was actually a case of history repeating itself because this appears to have had happened (as you rightly suggested) before.

William Goodwill Robson's wife Annie (nee Hesp) gave birth to 14 children although several died at birth or soon afterwards. The couple also adopted Lily Goodwill. Annie died in 1904 and in 1907 William married a widow named Florence Edgar. I have letters from your great great grandmother's brother David which do indicate that there were problems at that point. It would be inappropriate to post details on a public forum so I am hoping that you can somehow send me your e-mail address. I can then pass on some of the personal information and also attach a copy of a wonderful photograph recently sent to me. It was taken in the 1890's and shows your great great grandmother with the Robson family in Manchester.

Lovely to hear from you,

Sylvia

Sylvia,
Thank you so much for the information. I don't think even my mother knows why they moved from Indiana to Detroit.
As a matter of fact, your mother Lilias may remember my Grandmother Elsie (Annie's daughter). She would have been 5 or 6 when they came to live with the Welches.
My mother is going to be so happy to have some details filled in. She said that Annie didn't speak much about the past or history of the family, but that her mother Elsie mentioned things time to time.
My mother does remember an 'uncle' Dave that lived in Indiana. She said that he used to come visit and that there were relatives in Canada that would come to Detroit just to see him when he was there. I don't have any names so I don't know how they connect. Any ideas? My research does not show any Robsons in Canada.
I would love to see photos/letters. My mother has located a few photos in her possession. One is of a young Annie Robson with her husband Thomas Shore and the other is a picture of William Goodwill Robson with the Sandiford family outside 40 Cowper Street (that is all the information written on the back).
I would love to give you my email. Are we allowed to post that information on this forum?
Can't wait to hear back from you and thank you again for the wealth of information.
Kris
