Walton St Mary's Bowling club

Post by VenaJ »

Hi,
Does anyone know anything about Walton St. Mary's Bowling Club. I have a large picture taken (not quite sure of the date) about early 1900's -34 members with a large cup. Some of them are holding straw boater hats.

In the background is the back of the Brown Cow public house on the corner of Church lane (St Mary's) and Rice lane ( kindly identified by Dave Meridith after it was published in the September journal.)

The photo came from my late grandfather James Andrew Riddell's (b.1872 d.1931) house in Makin St Walton, but I don't have any information about it, and don't have any living relatives to ask.

I have been in touch with the Vicar of St Mary's, and have taken the photo to the local bowling club on Queens Drive, but didn't have any luck.
I was wondering if there were any local bowling records? I would be glad of any information.

Thanks Vena

That sounds a bit of a stumper as you've tried the obvious places, although you never know what might have been deposited at the Liverpool Record Office, it would be a good idea to send them an email and ask if they would check their archives for records.

There is another old-established bowling club in Walton, the Olympic. If you manage to make contact there, someone may know about the St Mary's club.
Don't mention my name - I have only visited a handful of times, many years ago!

Hi.
I have just had a look at the photo on flickr (very interesting site), and I'm not sure if it is the same club, as it's called Walton Park, and mine is St Mary's Walton, also my photo is quite a bit older, so the name might have changed over the years.

I did take the opportunity while I was on the site to upload my photo with a description, so you never know someone might recognise it.

Thanks Vena
