On the 1861 census, my gt.gt. grandfather, William Wood, kept The Cheshire Arms pub in Litherland Alley, off Canning Place. He died in December1864, and the place of death is given as The Albert Vaults, in Hurst Street. Can anybody tell me whether he was keeping both houses, or had he left the Cheshire Arms?

In the 1863 Slaters Directory there are two William Woods under the heading Spirit Vaults and Spirit Dealers.

One is at 20 Litherland Alley and the other at 38 Standish Street.

Just in case the name became confused there is also a William Woods (with an s) at 62 Lower Harrington Street.

No entries for either Albert Vaults or Woods in Hurst Street.

1860 Liverpool Directory gives William Wood, Victualler, Cheshire Vaults, 20 Litherland Alley.

Really need a directory in 1865 to see where he was listed, but it may be that you would have to check it at the Record Office as I don't see that anybody has a copy in our collective list of owned directories. http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =16&t=6906

The Albert Vaults was at 11 Hurst Street. It is identified in the 1861 census when the landlord was James Blower.

The Liverpool Mercury of May 15 1863 reports the transfer of licenses for premises in Hurst Street from James Blower to William Wood, and premises in Litherland Alley from William Wood to John Carruthers.

Thank you, Mary A and retiring type, for your help and assistance. The information you gave me was exactly what I was looking for. and has opened up a new line of enquiry. William Wood's widow, Elizabeth, eventually married John Carruthers. On the 1871 census they were living in Brownlow Hill, and John is listed as a cabinet maker.

John Carruthers was not a cabinet maker but a colour maker in the 1871 census. Same occupation on marriage to Elizabeth on 18 November 1866 at St Stephen the Martyr. Her address is given as 11 Hurst Street.

Oops! I should have gone to Specsavers. Thank you for the marriage info. very interesting. As a matter of interest, when Elizabeth died in 1883, her body was taken back home to Northwich, and buried with her first husband, William Wood, in the family grave.
